A First Printing set stated of the first authorized pocketbook editions of The Lord of the Rings following the pirate editions by Ace. The Fellowship of the Rings has creasing to spine with diagonal split at middle of same, short tear to top of rear cover, crease to top rear corner and general edgewear and rubbing/scuffing with a few marks/spots and some flakes to spine ends. Tanning to inside covers and a lesser extent text block. No writing and binding solid - Fair. The Two Towers has creasing to three corners and spine. Small stain to top of front cover, flake to head of spine and general edgewear with rubbing/scuffing. Tanning to inside covers and a lesser extent text block. No writing and binding solid - Good. The return of the King has some flakes to spine ends, crease to top front corner, edgewear and rubbing/scuffing. Tanning to inside covers and a lesser extent text block. No writing and binding solid - Good.

Ace 3 book set, UNAUTHORIZED or PIRATED edition published before the Ballantine editions, browning pages, soiled yellow printers ink on edges, tears/nicks/creases/bumped/& worn edges/corners/& head-heel of spine, Vol. 1 (A-4) is very poor with red cover & broken spine at back & several sections that have been reglued with edges worn & uneven with worn spine edges // Vol. 2 (A-5) is good+ with yellow cover & faded spine // Vol. 3 (A-6) is poor with blue cover & numerous nicks and tears on worn uneven edges plus a reglued section at back. Ace Books, 1965. Paperback. Very good/N/A. Published without Tolkien's blessing, these unauthorized Ace editions were soon afterwards discontinued, making them exceedingly rare. Includes The Fellowship of the Ring (A-4), The Two Towers (A-5), and The Return of the King (A-6).? Ace tried to be cheeky and capitalize on what they thought was a big enough loop-hole and publish the breakout series themselves, without paying Tolkien royalties for doing so... which as you can imagine, didn’t exactly go as planned. They pulled their editions from the market quickly, making these incredibly difficult to come by. Since these were the first widely available copies of the trilogy, they’re generally all in rough shape from being heavily read, making the nicer ones even more desirable.? Original or early paperback editions uniformly custom-bound in blue leather with silver titles on the spine, with the invoice for rebinding in French and English from an unidentified Saigon bookbinder circa late 1960s. HOBBIT is stated fifth Ballantine paperback printing Dec 1965. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (Part I of THE LORD OF THE RINGS) is the first Ballantine paperback edition Dec 1965; TWO TOWERS (Part II) is the unauthorized Ace paperback edition; and, RETURN OF THE KING (Part III) is the first Ballantine paperback edition Dec 1965. There is an owner name in the prelims of each volume, and the leaves are toned as expected in "pulps" of this nature. The covers are NOT bound-in. The hinges of the covers are variously revealed, and the corners worn a tad. Curiously, the binder, erred in numbering the Parts of Lord of the Rings on the spine, assigning III to Hobbit and leaving Fellowship of the Ring unnumbered, instead of III. Ace,, 1965.. Mass Market Paperback. Collectable, good. Three volume set, mass market paperbacks, illegal 1965 Ace Books edition, Ace-4, 5, and 6; red, yellow, and blue covers, each in apparently original clear mylar sleeve, all in like new red custom light-weight cardboard slipcase. Condition is rated only "good" because "Fellowship" mylar sleeve has, over the years, adhered to the spine and an inch of the rear cover along the spine; otherwise set is in Very Good condition. OVERALL: covers and page edges have very slight wear, pages a little tanned due to age, bindings are sound but due to age the binding glue may be weak so books should be opened gently; no marks or writing; mylar sleeves show no wear. FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING: mylar sleeve has adhered to cover as already mentioned; this is not visible but prevents the sleeve from being removed; sleeve has also caused a tanned stripe on the inside of the front cover along the edge of the sleeve.
