Kent, OH: Kent State University Libraries, 1971. Limited Edition. Portfolio. Fine. Quarto, 14 loose sheets housed in printed paper portfolio. All contents fine, with a few shallow corner creaases to portfolio. Deluxe issue, one of 50 unnumbered sets SIGNED by each of the contributors on their broadsides. The poets and artists were all connected in some way to KSU, and they were asked to submit new work for this portfolio, which was issued to commemorate the new library building on 9-10 April, 1971 (notably, less than one year after the killing of four students by Ohio National Guard troops during a heated protest on campus). The poetry broadsides are by John Ashbery, Gary Snyder, Steven Osterlund, James Bertolino, and Denise Levertov, and each is SIGNED by the author. The prints are by Robert Smithson, Otto Peine, Fairfield Porter, Harvey Quaytman, Mary Ann Begland, Grace Hartigan, and Alex Katz. Third printing (Myerson A12.1.c), the posthumous issue. Near fine, wtih just a touch of rubbing to extremities, and two interior blanks offset from a laid-in news clipping. Inscribed by Richard Maurice Bucke, one of Whitman's earliest biographers, to "Edith Maclure, Love from her friend R. M. Bucke, Asylum, London, Ontario, 16 June 1900." With a gift inscription from Ms. Love, signed "Mun," below. Dr. Bucke was the head of the Asylum for ths Insant in London, Ontario, and the author of Cosmic Consciousness: A Study in the Evolution of hte Human Mind." He was a friend of Whitman's, and one of his literary executors. Love was an American and the Director of Physical Training for Women at Indiana State Normal School.

Large octavo, 5 volumes, complete as published (two volumes of Austen's letters were issued nearly a decade later, and are sometimes offered together with this set). One of 1,000 limited sets, 950 of which were offered for sale. An exceptionally beautiful example of this notoriously fragile set, bound in the publisher's marbled boards with blue-ish cloth spines and printed spine labels; evocative of a Regency-period publisher's binding. Spines gently and evenly sunned, but a fine set, with handsome 20th century bookplates to each front paste-down. In the rare original dust jackets, somewhat darkened on the spines, and some with small stains and edge chips, but still at least very good. Aside form the many sets which were quickly bound up in leather, one surmises that surviving sets in the publisher's binding often had their jackets thrown away, as the bindings are more attractive. Perhaps a touch shaken, but still a fine copy in the publisher's greyish silk boards, backed in black leather, in matching publisher's slipcase, gently rubbed along extremities. First edition, deluxe issue, of this exhibition catalog. One of 100 numbered copies specially bound and signed by Graham Nash. Presentation copy, inscribed by Nash to Lydia Modi Vitale ("with much love and respect") on the colophon page. Vitale was the Director of the de Saisset Art Gallery and Museum at the University of Santa Clara, CA which hosted the inaugural exhibition of what was to have been a national tour of The Nash Collection. The tour as initially conceived by Nash had to be reconsidered in light of Vitale's resignation, for health reasons, of the Gallery Directorship. Octodecimo, bound in red morocco by Sotheran & Co. with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, elaborate gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, decorated with an erotic concealed fore-edge painting depicting a woman posing suggestively for four admiring gentlemen. The term 'fore-edge painting' can refer to any painted decoration on the fore-edges of the leaves of a book which is concealed when the book is closed but reappears when the edge is fanned out slightly. Often referred to as "The Master of Suspense", English film director and producer Alfred Hitchcock pioneered many elements of the suspense and psychological thriller genres. Over a career spanning more than half a century, Hitchcock fashioned for himself a recognizable directorial style. His stylistic trademarks include the use of camera movement that mimics a person's gaze, forcing viewers to engage in a form of voyeurism. Quarto, original publisher's cloth with gilt art-deco botanical design by Aubrey Beardsley, re-cased with careful repairs to the joints and hinges, top edge gilt, illustrated with twelve plates by Beardsley, numerous in-text designs, and head- and tail-pieces throughout. One of one thousand six hundred examples. In near fine condition with embossed stamps in blind to the top margins of some leaves, light toning to the edges, and an information slip adhered to the front free endpaper with tape.
