FIRST EDITION 1975, SPECIALLY BOUND EDITION OF 100 COPIES SIGNED BY LOWRY, THIS COPY OUT OF SERIES AND NOT NUMBERED, SOLD WITH AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF LOWRY and MERVYN LEVY. 4to, 280 x 240 mm, 11 x 9½ inches, 31 pages of text plus 31 colour and 99 black and white plates, bound in the publisher's full dark blue morocco, lettered gilt on spine with 2 gilt rules at head and tail, dark blue endpapers, all edges gilt, silk marker. A touch of rubbing to head and tail of spine, no previous owner inscriptions. A very good copy. Laid in is a large photograph of an elderly Lowry in conversation with the artist Mervyn Levy. Mervyn Levy (1914 – 1996) was a Welsh artist, art teacher and writer on art. Born in Swansea, where he became a friend of the painter Alfred Janes, the poet Dylan Thomas and the musician Daniel Jones, he spent most of his teaching career in Bristol and London, and made several popular television series about painting techniques. Corners just very slightly rubbed, head of spine very slightly worn with a minute nick to cloth, 2 very small pale spots to margin of plates at page 32 and page 88. Wonderful coloured illustration throughout with interleaved half-pages to advance the action on the same scene. The unlikely story of a pelican which becomes a sort of farm pet and has to be taught to fish. A touch of wear to head of spine and a very slight bump, tiny pale mark at tail of spine (see image), tiny rub to lower corner of upper cover, tiniest bump to top corner of lower cover, 1 tiny shallow dent to lower cover, no inscriptions, contents clean and bright.
