Approximately 145 x 110 mm, 5½ x 4¼ inches, cream boards, lettered dark green, hexagonal colour plate onlaid, coloured pictorial endpapers, 85 pages. Coloured frontispiece and 26 colour plates. Book leaning very slightly, tiniest bump to top corners, spine very slightly darkened at head and tail due to chips to dustwrapper, head and tail also very lightly rubbed, minute dent to lower edge of boards, no inscriptions, very light diagonal binding crease to page 17 and page 20 (colour plates - see image), contents otherwise very clean and bright. A very good plus tight copy in the slightly tattered original printed glassine dustwrapper (dw: small chips to head and tail of spine (maximum 25 mm, 1") and to top and bottom of folds, all text intact, tiny tear through price of "1/- Net" at foot of spine, small pale brown mark on blank upper panel - see images). In gilt printed blue cloth clamshell box with hook closure, with facsimile letter in envelope, complete with gilt printed tissue sheet, limitation label mounted inside lid and blue silk ribbon to hold books and letter. Facsimiles of the 3 stages in the publication of this title: the picture letter Potter wrote to Noel Moore in 1893; her own privately printed volume of 1901 (in card wraps as the original was issued); and the original deluxe cloth edition published by Warne in 1902. Plus colour illustrated 8 page booklet with information about Potter and the contents of this special edition. All items Fine in near Fine box (touch of fading to top edge). Complete with thin white card sleeve in which box was originally sold printed with title and barcode. Hand numbered 554 of an edition limited to 750 copies. Couple of 10 mm (½") splits in cloth on upper hinge, neatly stuck, front inner paper hinge cracked, binding sound, neat old inscription on front endpaper, occasional fingermarks and very slight soiling. A very good copy. The Dartons page 467, No.H753(4); Gumuchian 3102. The copies listed in The Dartons and Gumuchian had a 16 page catalogue at rear, not present in our copy. Lively coloured illustrations to every page. Taresh was the naughtiest boy in his Indian hill village, both at school and at the tea plantation where he worked. Sent away from the village in disgrace, he finds a role in life helping others who are worse off than himself. No inscriptions, a Fine copy in Fine clean DUSTWRAPPER, price clipped. Papas was born in 1927 in S. Africa, he had a Greek father and a German mother. He worked as a newspaper cartoonist first in S. Africa and from 1959 for the Guardian and later the Sunday Times.
