Bindings in three-quarter leather over marbled paper. Three raised bands on spine with gilt titles. Light rubbing and wear to exterior of both books. Top edge gilt, otherwise uncut. Marbled paper endpapers. Interiors remarkably clean; bindings tight. Complete with two folding maps plus folding diagram of their ship, "Fram" plus 21 maps and charts and over one hundred photographic illustrations documenting the expedition. Very Good Condition.

First American edition signed by author Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole, "Very sincerely yours Roald Amundsen" on front flyleaf. Originally published in Norwegian under the title "Sydpolen: den Norske Sydpolsfaerd med "Fram" 1910-1912."

After explorers reached the North Pole in 1909, attention turned to the South Pole with competing expeditions launching in 1911. Robert Scott led a highly publicized British attempt while Norwegian Roald Amundsen kept his destination secret until the last moment. The two expeditions were markedly different in their approaches with Amundsen's preparation, proper equipment, appropriate fur clothing, an understanding of dogs and their handling, and the effective use of skis allowed Amundsen to reach the South Pole December 14th, a month before Scott's group.

"The South Pole" contains Amundsen's narrative of the trip plus scientific results of the expedition. Filled with photos and diagrams. A classic of Polar Exploration, boldly signed by Amundsen.
