Per a small slip of paper laid in headed "Recent Documentation", announcing "On the eve of distribution, 'Volcanic Holiday' has already been part of the New York Public Library's 'Dorothea Tanning: Hail, Delirium!', a retrospective of the artist's work in graphics (1942-1991); Cooper Union's 'Printed Response to the Written Word'; and featured in a film documentary on Dorothea Tanning, with James Merrill reading 'Volcanic Holiday'' ".
___James Merrill (1926-1995), known as one of the leading poets of his generation, won nearly every major award for poetry - including two National Book Awards, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry awarded by the Library of Congress, and the Bollingen Prize in Poetry and the Pulitzer Prize. Praised for his stylish elegance, moral sensibilities, and transformation of autobiographical moments into deep and complex meditations, Merrill's work spans genres, including plays and prose, but the bulk of his artistic expression can be found in his poetry (N.B., from Poetry Foundation web site).
___Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012), painter, sculptor, and poet, was known for her vivid, dreamlike style of painting. Initially inspired by the Surrealists, she quickly grew into her own style incorporating a manic lucidity into her dreamy images.
___DESCRIPTION: Unbound as issued and encased in stiff grey paper wrappers with orange "sun"-like image on the cover, each folded page has an etching by Dorothea Tanning on the left side and text on the right, each image is bright and vibrant in full colour, the etchings were printed by Christian Guerin and Jennifer Melby, cover paper made by Paul Wong, printed in Palatino type on Rives BFK by Carol Sturm and Doug Wolf of Nadja Press; 10 signatures, 7" tall x 7.5" wide, signed by both author James Merrill and artist Dorothea Tanning, limited edition with this copy number IV of X special edition copies, of 110 total (of which the 26 lettered copies were not for sale). This deluxe edition includes a separate suite of eight original full-colour etchings with tissue guards, each etching is signed and numbered by Dorothea Tanning; the images measure 7" by 7.5", including the wide borders the pages measure 15" by 11"; the etchings are enclosed in a folder of the same grey paper with orange "sun" illustration on the cover. The prospectus is of heavy card stock, a single leaf folded once; laid in are a separate price sheet and the aforemention "Recent Documentation" slip. Both the volume and the etchings are encased in a grey cloth clamshell case with orange paper label, grey lettering on the spine, the case constructed by the Nadja Press.
___CONDITION: Volume, etchings, prospectus with related material, and case are all in fine condition with no wear or flaws, all corners are square and perfect with no tears or bumps; crisp and clean, as new (N.B., the prospectus was acquired separately).
