Paris,: Michel Lambert,, 1775.. 2 volumes: xix, [i], 640; [iv], 641-1070, [ii] pp. 8vo (13 x 20 cm.). Bound in contemporary polished calf, spine with raised band and gilt decorated, gilt lettered and numbered on green Morocco labels; red edges (an attractive binding with some minor rubbing and wear). ¶ A rare work, being a mixture of quackery and scientific medical bibliography. The first part here in 2nd corrected & enlarged edition was originally published in 1773 as "Methode familière pour guérir les Maladies Vénériennes", and was nothing more than an attempt to promote the use of author's nostrum "chocolat aphrodisiaque & anti-syphilique". The remainder of the text are in First edition. At pp. 55-63 a "life of Astruc". On pp. 759-821 we find the translation of Boehm's "Dissertation sur les differentes méthodes qui ont été employées pour guirir le Mal Vénérien" (no… Leer más

Dijon & Paris: Decentes, Desaint & Saillant (a.o.),, 1758.. [iv], xl, 673 pp. 4to (22.5 x 29 cm.). Contemporary half roan with 5 raised bands (some very minor rubbing), marbled boards; entirely uncut. Title and half-title printed in red and black, one folding table, devices and initial letters, a nice vignette, and 36 very fine, large folding, engraved plates. ¶ A very fine copy, printed on heavy paper with ample uncut margins, and the plates in good sharp impressions. Swammerdam is considered the most accurate of classical microscopists, who was first to observe and described red blood cells. Originally published in two volumes in 1737-1738 through the care of Herman Boerhaave, this work is probably the finest work of microscopical observations produced by Swammerdam, and in many way unsurpassed until the present. "The drawings in this collection surpass all contemporary work in exquisite delicacy and accuracy of detail" (Garrison). This edition was published in the series:… Leer más

Gandavi,: Typis Judoci Begyn,, 1786 (= 1787).. [10], 466, [ii]; [iv], 44, [iv] pp. 4to (20 x 24.5 cm.). Recent half brown morocco, spine with 5 raised bands; marbled boards. ¶ An interesting municipal pharmacopoea, published by order of the Collegium Medici Gandensis under the editorship of the pharmacists J. de Bever, A.D. Goormachtigh, G. van den Haute, and J. de Vos. The popolar names of the Materia Medica also give in Dutch. This was the last of a series of the municipal pharmacopoeasof Gent. The first was published in 1653 as 'Antidotarium Gandavensis", followed by an edition in 1663, and in 1756 as 'Pharmacopoea Gandavensis'. This is the last municipal pharmacopoea published in Belgium, and new was that the names of the Materia Medica are given in both Latin and Dutch. Today very rare.-- (A number of leaves slightly browned and/or partly foxed).

Haarlem,: Johannes Marshoorn,, 1735 (=1727).. [ii blank], [xvi], 518, [iv blank] pp. Small 8vo (11 x 16,5 cm.). Full contemporary vellum. Title printed in red and black. One of the rarest of all Dutch 18th century obstetrical books. Worldwide there are only 4 copies in library holdings (NLM, UBA, UBL & UBU), and haven't been offered for sale for decades. First, posthumously, published in 1727, this "tweden druk" is nothing more than a remainder of the sheets of the 1727 edition with a new title-page, dated 1735. Because of the great rarity of this work, its importance have been ignored by most of the historians of obstetrics (i.a. von Siebold). Johannes Huwé was born at Haarlem, promoted MD at Groningen in 1699. As a pupil of Van Deventer, he devoted most of his life to Obstetrics. He was the FIRST to consider the mechanism of labor from a dynamic and mathematics point of view (i.a. pelvimetry, inclination of the pelvis and uterus, measurement of the scull and lower… Leer más

Very finely bound in recent half marbled calf, gilt lettered on red morocco labels, gilt numbered, 5 blind rullers on spine. First (and only) Dutch translation of Rokitansky's "Handbuch d. speciellen Pathologische Anatomie", one of the great classics in medical history. "Bouvart, physician and doctor regent of the faculty of Paris, and associate-veteran of the Academy of Science, was born a Chartres. Many of his ancestors having been physicians, he determined on the same profession, which he practised at Paris with so much success that no other physician was more consulted; yet this did not prevent him being jealous of Tronchin, Bordeu, and some others, of whom he spoke very illiberally, but he was a man otherwise of great kindness and benevolence.
