The Fortunes of Nigel (1822) is one of the Waverley novels by Sir Walter Scott. Set in London in either 1623 or 1624, it centres on the Scottish community there after the Union of the Crowns and features James VI and I . On 30 September 1821 Scott indicated to his publisher Archibald Constable that The Pirate (which he would complete the following month) would be followed by a tale of the time of James VI and I. He began composition immediately The Pirate was finished. The first volume was complete before the end of the year; by the end of January 1822 Scott was halfway through the second volume; there were delays, in part because he devoted a considerable amount of time to the Introductory Epistle, but the work was brought to a conclusion in early May. Henry Mayhew (25 November 1812 – 25 July 1887) was a journalist, playwright, and advocate of reform. He was one of the co-founders of the satirical magazine Punch in 1841, and was the magazine's joint editor, with Mark Lemon, in its early days. He is also known for his work as a social researcher, publishing an extensive series of newspaper articles in the Morning Chronicle that was later compiled into the book series London Labour and the London Poor (1851), a ground-breaking and influential survey of the city's poor.
Myles Birket Foster RWS (4 February 1825 – 27 March 1899) was a British illustrator, watercolourist and engraver in the Victorian period. His name is also to be found as Myles Birkett Foster. John Adolphus (1768–1845) was an English barrister and historian. Born 7 August 1768, he was of German background. His grandfather had been domestic physician to Frederick the Great, and wrote a French romance, Histoire des Diables Modernes. His father lived for a time in London supported by a wealthy uncle, who provided the son with education, and sent him at the age of fifteen to be placed in the office of his agent for some estates in St. Kitts. Adolphus returned to London after something over a year, and was articled to an attorney. He was admitted an attorney in 1790, but after a few years began to write. The success of his history and the influence of Archdeacon William Coxe brought Adolphus into close connection with Henry Addington, then prime minister. Paris, Imprimerie de la République, 1798 - (1799). *** Première édition. Très bel album, de la plus grande rareté. Il contient 180 planches, certaines sur double-page ou dépliantes. Le nombre des planches varie suivant les exemplaires. L'ouvrage "est resté inachevé, ayant été supprimé par la justice à l'instance du comte Choiseul-Gouffier." (Graesse). Cohen donne 173 planches gravées et ajoute : "Cet ouvrage n'a pas été terminé. Les livraisons ont cessé de paraître après la 30ème. Il n'y a de texte que pour les 7 premières. Nous avons vu jusqu'à 192 planches dans un exemplaire." Description: Begins with The Book of Common Prayer, lacking title page and prelims. General title and New Testament title in facsimile (1608) on aged paper with woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column black letter. With Apocrypha as issued. The Two Tables after Revelation, ending on the colophon (1608). Concludes with the Whole Booke of Psalmes (1609), lacking the final leaf of Prayer as common. First chapter woodcuts initials, head- and tailpieces throughout.

Inscribed by Jacques-Yves Cousteau on the half-title page in his usual upper left location: "To the Guarinos, JY Cousteau." Scarce signed. A book that explores sharks via encounters while on the Calypso, Cousteau's famous research vessel. The book is co-authored with his son Philippe who carried the family mantle and distinguished himself as well in ocean conservation; the majority of the narrative actually seems to be by Philippe, but shorter sections by Jacques-Yves are interspersed. Rich with color photos and stills from films that the Cousteau team made. Jacques-Yves Cousteau remains the most famous oceanographer and marine science popularizer in history. [Likely Denver: The Author, 1907. Softcover. Fine. First edition. Octavo. 41; 54; [i.e. 95pp.]. Frontispiece and five plates from photographs. Printed buff wrappers. Small tear at head of the spine, front wrap with faint crease lines, very good or better. Inscribed by the author, a White soldier in the Civil War, Edwin Lucius Hoyt: "To J. M. Schenck with Compliments of 'The Boy Veteran' 4/9/07 Denver." The book has occasionally cited as being published in 1909, but given the authorial inscription and two internal dates, it was most likely published between 1905-1907. The book consists of various texts. The first part incorporates the Civil War diary of George W. Reese (p.4-17); the second part is entitled *History of 58th United States Colored Infantry* (p.19-41). Pagination then ceases and 54pp. of "Original Addenda" begins, primarily discussing the history and actions of the Twenty-Eight Illinois Veteran Volunteers. We could find no auction records or any other copies being offered in the trade.

Unbound. Fine. Gelatin silver photograph. 4.25" x 5.75". Fine. Good quality gelatin silver portrait of Baker. Signed by Baker in the lower right corner: "Souvenir du Josephine Baker." Baker is depicted full length, dressed in a caftan-type garment, with an elaborate head turban, her hands clutched below her throat. No evidence of photographer's mark. Accompanied by a lot slip from an auction indicating that the photograph sold in 2020 for $1300 plus premium.

Sylvia Plath's childhood copy of this YA novel - signed twice by Plath, with an original drawing by her and her bookplate laid in - the almost-too-apt story of a young Roman girl exiled to the soggy shores of Britain and burdened with a literal-minded mother named Aurelia. On February 21, 1944, a middle-school-aged Plath visited Wellesley's Hathaway House Bookshop and purchased a copy of Caroline Dale Snedeker's THE WHITE ISLE. Snedeker was the author of several popular historical novels set in the ancient world, writing a few years before Rosemary Sutcliffe and possessing a similar appeal; Plath read this novel a month after writing a school paper on "Roman People Places and Things" (Rollyson). The heroine Lavinia, like Plath, is barely 13 and the daughter of an "Aurelia" - the same name as Plath's mother, which Plath has carefully underlined three times in the book. These rare volumes contatin portraits and short biographies of persons of notoriety in 17th and 18th century Britiain, including highwaymen, convicts, preachers, misers, beggars, aristocrats, murderers, rebels, etc. Each entry has an engaved plate of the individual.
Marbled boards are intact but scuffed, rubbed and soiled so as to obscure most of the marbling. End pages are still beautifully marbled. However 2 of the four volumes (# 1 & 3) have a loose first register (10 pages) that include the FFEP, title page, table of contents, etc. Volume 4 has the first engraved plate loose (see images). With a little care, these can be repaired. Due to the age of the books, there is moderate foxing and some staining to pages, but all of the text is clear and readable. Spines still show most of the gilt titles and design and are bumped at head and foot. A printed bookseller's description of the volumes is pasted to Volume 1 end paper.
