The Chicago Theatre was a repertory, and experimental art-theatre producing modern and classical plays, both tragedy and comedy at popular prices. It was located on Michigan Avenue in the Fine Arts Building. The play takes place in rural Lithuania, a impoverished family is visited by a wealthy stranger. Brooke never anticipated seeing his play produced. A few tiny nicks to front cover fore-edge, otherwise, clean fresh cover with interior likewise.

1915. [Chicago:] The Chicago Little Theatre, 1915. Original pictorial wrappers. First Edition of Rupert Brooke's only play, considered (by Keynes among others) to have consisted of only 200 copies. Before the war young Brooke wrote this play, never expecting it to be performed (a stranger gets lost in rural Lithuania and stops for the night at a hut where there's this farmer's daughter...). However it was in fact produced at The Chicago Little Theatre, and this booklet was published, in October 1915 (six months after Brooke had died of sepsis while part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force en route to Gallipoli). This experimental art theatre had been founded in 1912 by the British poet Maurice Browne and his wife Ellen Van Volkenburg (the American actress "Nelly Van"); they had been encouraged to do so by Lady Augusta Gregory, and thus tried to model it after Dublin's Abbey Theatre. A first edition of this play by tragic war poet and writer Rupert Brooke, first performed the year of his death at the Chicago Little Theatre. Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was an English poet remembered for his war poetry. He was a friend amongst the Bloomsbury group of writers, and was a member of the literary groups the Georgian Poets and the Dymock poets, which included Robert Frost and Edward Thomas as members. His sonnets written during the First World War remain some of the most important examples of Western war poetry, with 'The Soldier' and 'The Dead' being his most well known verses. He tragically perished from sepsis from a mosquito bite whilst sailing with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the First World War at the age of twenty-seven.This is a play, published for its first performance at the Little Theatre Chicago.
