In thick brown leather, front and back decorated with blind stamped floral motif and surrounded by gilt border with smaller floral motif, within ruled lines; good, clean, straight covers but edge-worn, loose from spine with leather cracked; reinforced from endpapers with black tape. Spine tight, with horizontal ruled gilt lines and leaf motif design, good, but ends chipped; Endpapers tanned, marks on front endpapers. Cut edges gilt, fairly clean. Text block tanned, mostly around the edges, some foxing on early and late pages. With steel plate illustrations, coloured maps, plant drawings, biblical scenes etc., mainly by T.W. Ogilvy M'Niven; frontispiece of 'Pagan Rome' with tissue guard. Rare. Very heavy. Scarce.
