Contemporary full tree calf, later re-backed, with elaborately gilt tooled spine neatly relaid and replaced label, board edges gilt tooled with gilt borders and marbled endpapers (boards a little pitted and scratched and corners bumped). Title page expertly repaired to margin fore-edge, early repair to another leaf. Contents in thor. vg. condition - please ask for further information. More recently rebound in period style full leather with gilt lettering, raised bands and blind tooled decoration, all in fine condition. London: John Martyn, Printer to the Royal Society, 1679 A very good copy of John Evelyn's (1620-1706) famous work in new quarter leather binding, retaining the original spine with raised bands, and adding new calf endcaps, shoulder strips and marbled boards. With title page in red and black inks covering all 4 sections of the work. Sylva is the 3rd edition revised by Evelyn and with a new dedication to the King. It is the first edition to contain the poem 'The Garden' written by Abraham Cowley. With 2 page dedication to the King, 16 pp note to the Reader, 4 pp poems, 2pp 'Advertisement' - containing definitions, 'The Garden' with dedication 7pp and Table of Chapters - the index for the whole 4 books. Pagination is continuous for Sylva, Terra and Pomona. Sylva is pp 1-281 and contains 4 engravings, one full page, and 8 pp of tables. The first edition (Sylva) was published in 1664, and has the distinction of being the first official publication of the Royal Society. Later editions contain additional material. Brown calf ruled in gilt with a gilt-lettered spine. Edges speckled red. . Folio. Title page printed in red and black. Textual engravings and diagrams in addition to engraved borders, headbands, tailpieces, and initial letters. A few leaves misnumbered and a few gatherings missigned. Binding extremities lightly worn and rubbed with some minor chipping to spine and back cover. Crown of spine worn away less than 1/4." Very minor foxing. Engraved armorial bookplate on front pastedown. A very good copy. John Evelyn (1620-1706) is well known for his work Diary. In total portrait and 44 plates (3 folding) and 2 tables. Contemporary calf, recently rebacked preserving original labels. Early ink signature of Charles Talbot on the title pages, later ownership inscriptions on dedication and front free endpapers. Boards a little scuffed and worn, pastedowns split at joints, occasional light offsetting from the plates and negligible foxing, some creasing and closed tears to folding plates, but overall a very good, bright, well-margined copy with clean plates. § A handsome wide-margined copy of the last (and most complete) edition of the 18th- century.
