Baron Waldstein, 1581-1623, of Moravia was a well educated, wealthy young man when he traveled throughout England in the summer of 1600 keeping detailed notes in Latin of everything he saw at every place he visited. The numerous annotations by the translator and the interesting illustrations give one a Baedeker like view of Elizabethan England..

The high point of Waldstein's visit was an interview with Queen Elizabeth herself, who, 'glittering with the glory of majesty and adorned with jewellery and precious gems, entered into the view of the whole assembly and stretched her arms out wide as it to embrace everyone present'. It needed considerable charm and address (as well as his noble birth) to make so obviously good an impression upon her that 'she promised then and there that all the doors of her kingdom should be open to me'. From an on-line posting: "The Diary of the Young Czech, Baron Waldstein, admirably translated and annotated, describes the tour he made in England in 1600. It describes Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Old St. Paul's (with Hatton's recent tomb the most spectacular); Whitehall, the Tower, Greenwich; Oxford and Cambridge; Theobalds, Burghley House, Holdenby; above all the Queen herself, to whom Waldstein was presented and upon whom she made the usual impression. Greatly impressed by the wealth of England, the young man thought the colleges much richer than they were, The book has been enabled to be published by a grant from Saudi Arabia.
