Two volume set, rebound in dark green buckram with paper labels on front boards and spines, 9 5/8" H. B&w illustrations. A facsimile reprint of the 1699 edition printed in London for Henry Bonwicke. Ex-college library with the following markings: stamps on bottom edges of text blocks, faint residue on spines from removal of labels, rear free endpapers show evidence of removal of pockets, front free endpapers have small amount of white-out and blank book plates (covering library markings?). Both volumes are printed on cream-coloured stock with text in reddish-brown and each one commences with a Dedication to King William III, followed by a Preface and list of Contents. Volume One: text pages run 1-240. Title continues: Also, the Manners, Customs, and Languages of the several Native Indians; and the Advantage of Commerce with those different Nations. Very good. 353p,711p octavo, reprinted from the second London issue of 1698 with facsimilies (some fold-out) of the original title pages, maps and illustrations. Old very faint dampstain at the upper corner on the last few pages of volume 2, but very visible on the gilt top edge. Otherwise a very good set in brown cloth.

Thwaites has added an introduction notes and index. Leather spine, corners. Marbleized covers and endpapers.. reprint of 1698 second printing with maps etc. Bottom front edge shows a little wear. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co. , 1903. Father Louis Hennepin was a Belgian friar, who had actually returned to Europe by the time these works were published. Although Hennepin's works were widely read, they were relatively inaccurate. Still, this work was very influential in shaping impressions of North America in the late 17th century (the work first appeared in English in 1698). The two volume copy offered here is number 78 of 150 large paper copies, uncut and with vellum gilt-lettered spines in grey cloth boards. The spines are a bit soiled, but the bindings are tight, and aside from some foxing (most of text quite clean) this is a nice set.
