Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. 1/4 Tan coloured cloth covered back strip with paper pasted to the back strip, and within that insert green coloured titles. 3/4 sage green coloured boards. Collection of poetry from this author dealing with romance, unrequited love and longing. The book is showing its age and use. Small splits to all corners of the back strip along with some fraying. The front and rear spine gutters had the small tears – the front 2.5" and the rear 1.5". Rubbing to the book edges and panels with uniform tanning of the text block edges and pages. Hope's second book of poetry, originally published in 1903. She spent almost all of her adult life in India, and her writing "steeped in the Indian landscape and Sufi symbolism, often assumes the voices of Indian dancers and slaves to engage themes of passionate love and loss. Her first collection, The Garden of Kama (1901), was initially presented as a translation and arrangement, rather than the original poetry it was later revealed to be." While her work was very popular at the time, they would not have been considered proper for a woman to write, thus the adoption of a male pen name. In an attractive red cloth binding with a stylish art deco illustration on the front cover, gilt lettering on the spine. 152 pp.

The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light rubbing and bumping to the spine ends and corners. The text pages are clean and bright. The foredges of the text block are uncut. The dust jacket has edge wear, rubbing, foxing, ground-in dirt, several edge tears, nicks and a couple of snags to the rear spine joint. "In 1901, she published Garden of Kama, which was published a year later in America under the title India's Love Lyrics. She attempted to pass these off as translations of various poets, but this claim soon fell under suspicion.
