On the library table are Kelmscott works, including William Morris's The Glittering Plain and his 1895 translation of Beowulf. All the books are clearly bound in the distinctive Kelmscott full limp vellum tied with silk ribbons. The Wood Beyond the World is open to show a Morris-designed woodcut border and frontispiece. Leaning against the bookcase is a copy of the 1896 edition of Chaucer.

The first novel of Jack Kerouac, using his more unfamiliar original name. A coming of age story, where the protagonist is grieving over the death of his father and gripped with the determination to write the great American novel. Softening and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the backstrip and rubbing to the book corners will. the underlying board is visible to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel. Uneven fading to the front panel and sunning to the backstrip. Foxing to the backstrip and to the textblock edges and to the internal pages, most particularly noticeable to the endpapers. Very Good in a Very Good jacket, clipped, generally soiled, toned at the spine, rubbed and with a few small closed tears at the edges and corners. Green cloth on the boards, mottled and toned at the spine. Square and firmly bound, foxed at the edges and endpapers, clean otherwise. A nice UK first printing of Kerouac's debut novel, originally published in the United States in 1950. In typical Kerouac fashion, it is an autobiographical work that juxtaposes life in small-town Massachusetts and big-city New York. In addition to citing critic Mark van Doren as calling Kerouac "wiser than Thomas Wolfe," it also praises the novel for including "some of the best football scenes ever written, scenes which really convey the excitement and hazards of the game.

Stated First Edition; A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket. A handsome copy of this debut novel from the author of "On the Road" and "Big Sur"; one of the most influential writers of the 20th Century. This copy is in near fine condition showing only light rubbing to the board edges, a faint foxing to the page edges, and a previous owner's stamp to the front free paper. Housed in a clean and bright very good dust jacket that shows moderate rubbing and chipping to the spine ends, edges, and corners, a small dampstain to the top of the back panel, and a couple of short closed tears to the spine foot. A presentable copy of Kerouac's first book. Very Good book with a few traces of wear to the bottom edges of the boards in a Very Good moderately edge-worn dust jacket with a few small areas of faint rubbing to the rear panel.

In a Very Good+ dust jacket with some chips at tears at the spine and a faint dampstain, mostly visible from the verso. Slight chip on the rear panel close to the portrait of Kerouc. This work was heavily influenced by the writing of Tom Wolfe and intensely edited. The following year Kerouac would write his second novel, On the Road, marking a dramatic shift in writing style to the quintessential voice of Beat literature. An interesting first novel from one of the most important and influential writers to come out of the mid-twentieth century. "In this big, rambling first novel, Kerouac tells of a Massachusetts family that is gradually dissolved by the recent war, the forces of modern life and the passage of time... a rough diamond of a book" (Contemporary New York Times Review). A stated First Edition of John [Jack] Kerouac's first book published in 1950. A landmark publication by perhaps the most famous author of the Beat Generation chronicling, perhaps semi-biographically, a Milltown family from Massachussetts who leave for the city during the Great War and return home after to digest the difficulties now apparent between generations. (jacket bright with minor light edgewear, small nick at lower spine tip and a short tear (1in.) to the rear panel at the upper edge).

Backstrip and upper edges of the boards lightly spotted. Endpapers partially browned and with some additional light spotting which also impacts several preliminary and (blank) concluding leaves. A very good copy in very good non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with just a touch of spotting and tanning, several tiny closed tears and several slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. First published by Harcourt Brace in the US in March 1950, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition followed a year later. The novel was not a success: it was trashed by a number of reviewers, Kerouac's royalties did not exceed his advance of $1,000 and it was six years before the publication of his next novel, 'On the Road'..
