"While the book is mostly about opium it also contains early 20th century claims about cannabis and cocaine" (University of Victoria, Canada). Sometimes published under the pseudonym, Janey Canuck, Emily F. Murphy was a Canadian writer and women's rights activist. Appointed in 1916, she was the first woman magistrate in Canada and in the British Empire. Among her well-known contributions to feminism was her work with The Famous Five, insisting that women be considered "qualified persons" under Canadian law, which would enable them to serve in the Senate, a case they eventually won.
