Holmes began his medical career as a general practitioner but shifted into academics, becoming professor of anatomy and physiology at Dartmouth (1838-40), dean of Harvard Medical School (1847-82). He published two important medical lectures, including this one - promoting scientific discoveries in opposition to the practice of homeopathy, phrenology, and other `alternative' therapies. (The other was on the nature of fevers). His main fame though comes as a poet, novelist, biographer, and essayist.
