Light rubbing to extremities, corners mildly nudged. Foxing to frontis and title page. Fore-edges of two pages chipped a bit. Family letter, of 1910 laid-in, which states this belonged to Grandpa Fletcher who was in the Civil War imprisoned in Andersonville prison. 379 pp. Very nice. Solid binding. Handsomely bound in full red grained leather lettered and extensively decorated in gilt, slightly raised spine bands, all edges gilt, tilt tooled inner dentelles, full page black and white illustrations, book about 6.5 inches tall. Modest edge rubbing, spine a little darkened, hinges secure but with surface cracks at the endpapers, binding firm, pages clean with just a few minor instances of light foxing (age speckling), name neatly written at top of front free endpaper, tiny personal library label of W. In full salmon pink calf "extra" binding with a broad neoclassical gilt decoration of intertwined leaves and flowers bordering both boards,stamped gilt dentelles and board edges, all edges gilt. Five raised bands to the spine enclose compartments of similar decoration, with the title and volume numbers onlaid with black calf labels. Blue paste downs with engraved bookplate of the important nineteenth-century Boston book collector, Henry B. Humphrey, with the original pencilled ref. number of the book sale catalogue of 1871. "There is no doubt about the fact that the success of Southey's edition ensured that [White's] poetry was widely read" (ODNB). Miniature, octavo (97 x 54 mm). Contemporary purple calf, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, double gilt fillets and blind tooling to covers, brown endpapers, edges marbled. Frontispiece and title-page vignette. Minor rubbing to joints and front cover, internally bright and clean. A near-fine copy.

A scarce first thus edition of the collected poetical works of the renowned English poet Henry Kirke White. Henry Kirke White, who died at the tragically young age of twenty one, had a short but prolific literary career. First publishing his poetical works in literary magazines, White went on to publish his own collection of poetry in 1803 'Clifton Grove, a Sketch in Verse, with other Poems'. However the vast majority of his work was unpublished during his lifetime. White's letters and a great deal of his unpublished poems were collected together by his brother Neville and edited by Robert Southey (with a biography), published in 1807 as the 'Remains of Kirke White'. The work was a great success and went through many printings and four revised editions over the next thirty years.
