Bound in red cloth with beveled edges; design in gilt. Boards soiled; spine sunned with dulled lettering. From the Sondley Reference Library of Asheville, and bearing the name of F. A. Sondley on the front end paper. Library book plate and blind stamp. Forster Alexander Sondley, attorney and scholar, was born at Montrealla, his maternal grandfather's home in Alexander, a community ten miles north of Asheville. As an adult he most often referred to himself as F. A. Sondley. A lawyer, historian, and collector of art, he is chiefly remembered for his personal library of approximately 30,000 volumes containing hundreds of rare works on southern and state history and natural history. The city of Asheville acquired the library by bequest at his death, and parts of it still form the nucleus of the Sondley Reference Library in Asheville.

John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1883. Hard cover. Fair/No jacket. Cover is worn, particularly on the top and bottom edges and the corner edges. The spine is tattered on both from the top and bottom edges with a one inch tear along the top and bottom sides of the hinges. Spine is bumped and is shaken, but binding is secure. Binding is visible on the front and back end page leaves. The inside of the back cover is chipped. Pages are yellowed, but otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. As is.

This is a popular work on account of its luxurious illustrations.With fifty-two full plates in colour and black and white by the author.  Comprising 17 chromolithographs, and 35 wood engraved plates. Contains chapters on Mexican antiquities, hotels, railways, coinage, ruins, amusements and churches.With institutional library stamps to the front pastedown, with no other evidence through the work; these have been rubbed out by a previous owner and so are faded. In a half calf binding. Externally slightly rubbed, with wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine and extremities resulting in slight loss to the leather. Internally front hinge is strained but firm, otherwise firmly bound, pages are bright and clean. The remnants of ex libris stamps to the front pastedown only,… Leer más
