Frederick A. Stokes Co., 1924. Hardcover. Good. Folio in 1/4 vellum on buff paper boards, gilt extra to the spine. Vellum a bit soiled, boards modestly rubbed at the corners, light shelf wear, both hinges cracked, the first signature has separated from the binding. There is a scrape to the paper on the front board, partially obliteraing 'That' in the title, other light but long scrapes to the front board. All 48 plates and all of the text are present and undamaged.

A true one-hit wonder, this was Timlin's masterpiece of illustration, lettering and fantastic literature.>

One of the classic works of fantasy and the author's solitary children's book. Only 2000 copies printed of which 600 were used for the American edition. Large format. Vellum spine with gilt titles and decoration. Grey paperboards. 48 magical colour plates. Both calligraphic text and plates are mounted on grey art paper making this a truly unusual item. Spine and corners bumped and worn, some chipping to top and tail of spine. Covers are grubby and marked, edges are rubbed. There is some surface paper damage to covers, particularly at edges. Binding re-stitched. Some damage to front endpaper. Small margin tears. Apart from some slight fingering all plates seem fine. A good copy of this scarce item.

With 48 colour illustration plates and calligraphic text both mounted on dark grey card throughout. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the spine a little darkened and the paper cracked and frayed to a few spots on the board corners and edges. The contents, with offsetting to the endpaper and some toning and occasional chipping to the page edges (not effecting the illustration or text plates), are otherwise bright and clean throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. William M. Timlin (1892 – 1943) was born in Northumberland but spent most of his life in South Africa. William Mitchenson Timlin (1892-1943) was born in Northumberland, England and studied art in Newcastle before following his parents to South Africa, where he completed his studies in art and architecture and remained there for the rest of his life. At the same time, he worked as an artist, producing paintings, etchings, and pastels for which he is best known. In 1923 he published this work which he wrote, illustrated, and produced himself. First edition, 4to., 48 mounted pages of calligraphic text, 48 mounted colour plates, publisher’s vellum-backed boards, spine elaborately decorated in gilt; foxing to title and dedication pages, and, lightly, to first text leaf, foxing and toning to endpapers, occasional foxing within, particularly at inner margins, very slight rubbing and minor darkening to head and tail of spine, paper worn at corners of boards, but spine quite bright with clear gilt decoration, overall about very good, in a rather worn and heavily repaired dust-jacket with archival tape to reverse, which has creasing, closed tears and minor loss to extremities, as well as some marking to the paper (splash-marking to front of jacket), but largely complete and now in protective cover. A futuristic journey that was from its very conception sweetly moored in the misty past! 4to. 31 by 24 cm. 48 pp and 48 tipped-in (or mounted) color plates. The singular story and its illustrations are truly sui generis; the fabulous concoction of fantasy rendered here draws equally from both the text and illustrations. Condition: corners bumped, with paper pastedown a bit rubbed. Edgewear to lower edges. A hint of starting, front upper joint. Quarter vellum quite clean and bright. Leaves of card (the backing for the pastedowns) have a slight waviness, as typical of this book. Plates, both text and pictorial, clean. DJ has been rebacked, with most of DJ spine preserved and mounted -- see photos. Minor losses to DJ over boards. Some stains, crease lines, and other signs of wear on DJ. DJ, though, a truly rare survivor in any form, and this DJ has maintained its essential integrity.

S. edition published by Stokes; one of 200 copies, 1750 copies were printed of the UK first edition published by Harrap, this is the simultaneous US printing by Stokes, one of 250 copies, with Stokes imprint on spine panel of DJ and book and on title page, "Printed in Great Britain" printed on inside of DJ. Complete with all 48 color plates and all text, title, and contents pages, all plates and text mounted on gray paper as issued. Cloth and boards are immaculate, gilt on spine still brilliant, no fraying to cloth but paper covering tips and bottom edges of boards has frayed due to weight of book. NY: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1924. Timlin, William M.. First American edition. One of only 250 copies designated for the United States from a total edition of 2,000. The handsomely produced and lavishly illustrated tale of an old man who builds a square-rigged ship with the help of fairy artisans, and sails through the inhabited wonderland of space to a fairyland Mars. The text is written out calligraphically with ornaments in two colors, and tipped onto gray paper. Forty-eight colored plates, also tipped-in, show Timlin's genius in the art of fantasy. Timlin, who was born in England and lived in South Africa, was an architect, musician, composer, painter, and etcher. This was his only attempt at fantasy. The film rights were sold in the United States, where he was popular during his lifetime. Publisher's printed boards backed in gilt-stamped parchment. Corners and extremities are somewhat bumped and rubbed, some toning to endpapers, else a near fine copy in very good original printed dust… Leer más
