One of the premiere accounts of La Salle's tragic final voyage, compiled from the diary of his close subordinate. The party embarked in 1684, ostensibly to establish a French base at the mouth of the Mississippi as headquarters for operations, but as well to push as far as possible into the region in order to gain a foothold against the Spanish. In fact, and via a conscious deceit, the base was established at Espiritu Santo Bay, in Texas, where the party spent two years making excursions into the surrounding territory. When expected reinforcements failed to appear, La Salle and his men determined to return to Canada via the Mississippi; however, a member of the expedition assassinated La Salle when they reached the Trinity River, and the company split up. Previous owner's signature, in part blurred or crossed out, with 1777 date, in ink. Joutel was a French soldier whose father had worked for LaSalle's family as a gardener. He became a close confidante of LaSalle, and accompanied the explorer on his third and final expedition, during which Lasalle was murdered at the hands of his own men. Joutel, who was not present at the time of the assassination, discovering the mutiny upon his return, narrowly escaped the mutinous crew, and accompanied by a small band of the six remaining loyal crew, went overland 800 leagues (about 2600 miles) from Texas to Quebec, Canada. Henri Joutel the preeminent eyewitness historian of the La Salle expedition. Henri Joutel was a native of Rouen, France, which also was the hometown of René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. At the time the expedition was being organized, his amanuensis tells us, Joutel had just returned from "sixteen or seventeen years" in the army. Influenced by La Salle's reputation as an explorer and his own acquaintance with other members of the expedition, he decided to join.

XXXIV, 386 pp.Extremely rare first edition of the journal of the last voyage made by De La Salle to America and the Gulf of Mexico to explore the Mississippi River and Louisiana. The expedition turned out tragically, for De La Salle was murdered by his own men during the journey on 19 March 1687. This account is written by Henri Joutel, one of his companions and probably the only person on board whom he could rely on. Charlevoix, who knew Joutel personally, once described him as a very upright man.This work is rare as it is, but our copy is of a much greater rarity because it contains the large folding map, which is almost never found with the book. The beautifully designed and engraved map depicts a small view of Nicaragua, part of the Atlantic and the coastal areas of America and Middle America, which are relevant for the expedition.
