Descripción:
Chosho Publishing, 2022. Reprint. Paperback. New. 360pp. Octavo [22.5]. Illustrated wraps. This is a print-on-demand title, but the text is clear and easy to read. The author never wished this title to be reprinted, and the author would not wish you to read it. Abbey himself described this early novel as "bad Thomas Wolfe" and was embarrassed by it almost as soon as it was published. He refused to allow a reprint during his lifetime (with the exception of a single chapter found in "The Best of Edward Abbey," a compilation originally titled "Slumgullion Stew"). As a result, this title has been out-of-print for 68 years. However, the seeds and germination of everything Abbey would become throughout his literary career and personal life are contained within the pages of Troy. The anarchist, the wobbly, the classic music loving, flute playing hedonist, the pagan and wilderness lover.

Descripción:
Dodd, Mead & Co., New York, 1954 Bound in the original black paper covered boards with yellow lettering. The binding is bright and clean with slight wear to extremities. Evidence of tape residue and offset to prelims and rear pastedown. Rear free endpaper excised and last blank leaf with large tear and soiling. The dust wrapper is clean and bright with slight soiling and edge wear, spine faded. Overall a good only copy with a bit better dust wrapper. The irascible, irritable Abbey went on to much greater fame as an environmentalist but his literary career began here with his alter ego of Jonathan Troy. As is well known he disavowed the novel in later years and it was never reprinted. In his mind it was a youthful indiscretion better left forgotten.

Descripción:
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1954. First edition. Near fine in near fine jacket.. First printing - and only edition - of Abbey's first book, talked about but rarely seen by Abbey aficionados. Abbey's biography James A. Cahalan describes how embarrassed the author would become about his first novel: "Abbey remained so unhappy with his first novel that he always refused to have it reprinted [...] and left instructions that it not be reprinted after his death. As a result, JONATHAN TROY became a very expensive collector's item." Nevertheless, he concludes: "Abbey was too hard on himself; this novel is certainly flawed, yet interesting." A truly lovely copy of a scarce book. 8'' x 5''. Original black glazed paper boards, yellow-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($3.50) color pictorial dust jacket designed by Stefan Salter. [8], 374 pages. Faint offsetting to endpapers. Jacket lightly rubbed at spine head, with foxing to top edge.

Dodd, Mead & Co., 1954. First edition, first printing. Publisher's full black cloth, spine titled in yellow, in dust jacket. Spine ends rubbed with light wear and closed tear, spine foot with small bump, overall a near fine copy in a bright, very good dust jacket with short closed tear and light chipping along top of spine and some mild foxing and soiling to rear cover and jacket verso, in mylar cover.. 8.25" x 5.75". 374pp. A SOUTHWEST RADICAL'S REJECT "I don't know where you can find one, but if you do, burn it" was Abbey's response to a searching fan looking for a copy of his first book, Jonathan Troy. His biographer, James Cahalan, recollects that, while reading the galley proofs prior to publication, Abbey thought the novel was "even worse than [he] thought...too juvenile, naive, clumsy, pretentious." Once published, it was a resounding failure. The hatred and regret that Abbey had towards the book persisted into the early 80's, once again calling it "a disgusting novel, fortunately long out…
