Green felt protective inner liner. In good condition. Edges a little rubbed and corners rounded. Some small tear to edge of frontis plate but with neat repairs. Some handling marks and slight darkening to pages, some light small foxing spots, bottom corners a little darkened from p85 onward. Some minor fading to text. else very clean and tight. Smartly presented in protective box case. 118pp. + 2pp adverts. Illustrated with an engraved frontis plate.

Small trade label affixed to base of frontispiece: "John Higginbotham / Fishing-Rod Maker / (From Drury Lane) / At the Golden Fish, No. 1 opposite / Southampton Street, Strand." Westwood and Satchell, pp. 39-40: "[The author] was considered the most finished fly-fisher of his day." Heckscher 255. Owner's ink note at base of title page "W.B. 1798," but a good solid copy. Old limp vellum (quite rubbed), manuscript title and owner's initials on spine "Angling 1798 W.B.". (8709).

XI, 218, [2] pp.Rare early edition (the fifth?) of a popular angling handbook that went through many editions far into the 19th century, all the 18th-century ones in 12mo format. Charles Bowlker’s father Richard wrote the text for the first two editions (Worcester [1758?] and London 1766) but Charles reworked his father’s handbook for the 1774 edition. “This was the standard textbook of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century ... Charles was considered the most ?nished ?y-?sher of his day. For such a small volume it is very wide-ranging, with more advice on the choice of tackle than on tactics, and with much of the material taken from seventeenth century writers. It is an important milestone in popular angling literature” (Westwood/Satchell).The editions printed by Swinney (all rarer than Baskerville’s and rarer than the first edition) are important typographically, showing types in the Baskerville style: Handy may have retained duplicate matrices for some of the types he cut for… Leer más
