1804 Thomas Jefferson 1ed Burk History of VIRGINIA Colonial America Columbus 2v

John Burk's "History of Virginia" is one of the best early 19th-century accounts of the history of Virginia and colonial America. It also happens to be one of the most historically accurate and relevant much in part to the availability of first-hand manuscripts from Thomas Jefferson. While the majority of the work focuses on the development of American culture and politics, Burk does provide context for influences including ancient Egyptian commerce, Carthaginian military, and Columbus and Spanish exploration.

These first two volumes from the 1804 first edition include many of Thomas Jefferson's own remarks found in his "Notes on the State of Virginia".

Fairly solid copies with wear to the extremities, particularly the corners and the spine ends; the front boards of Volume II and III have been sensitively secured/reattached; spine label of Volume I is lacking. All volumes show the expected foxing and toning to the contents but are clean. Volumes I and II have the book plate of Virginia and West Virginia politician Charles James Faulkner; evidence of a bookplate removed from Volume III; Volume IV bears the contemporary owner name of John Parham. Light scattered foxing and soiling, even toning. Very good. Untrimmed. The scarce second issue of Burk's important history of Virginia, comprised of the original sheets issued with new titlepages, here present with the very rare fourth volume. The latter volume, issued years after the rest of the set, was largely destroyed by fire and only a few copies have survived. The author, well known as a dramatist, was an Irish emigrant and enthusiastic Jeffersonian. After his death in a duel in 1808, the fourth volume was written by Skelton Jones and Louis Girardin, supposedly with the aid of Thomas Jefferson, to whom it is dedicated.
