Large map in rear pocket with some closed tears. ; This is the adventurous journey of Captain Burnaby and Englishman who went on horseback with the support of only a couple of servants through Russia to the city of Khiva (nowadays Uzbekistan). It was winter and the conditions were rough and life threatening. In addition a war was starting. The Captain was one of the first westerners to be able to cross Turkestan as previous travelers have been stopped before. Burnaby’s famous journey on horseback from St. Petersburg to Khiva during the winter of 1875-1876 in what is now Uzbekistan, which had just lately been closed to travellers.
