In good bright green cloth boards, gilt title field and decorative border to front with green and gilt titles. The covers are a little warped rom damp, with slight discolouration from damp front and back. Slight wobble to front cover; corners a little frayed. Unmarked end papers. Dark brown tinted top cut edge; the fore and tail edges are quite clean. The tail edge is warped. The text block throughout is warped. The pages are very clean and tightly bound, with 12 beautiful tipped in colour illustrations by E.J. Detmold with tissue guards. The illustrations have not been affected from the damp/water damage. Slipcase very slightly rubbed, else fine. Featuring, among others, the immortal tales of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Sindbad the Sailor, and Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, this edition with the evocative Detmold illustrations is perhaps the most picturesque yet produced. There is dampstaining to front edges of the covers and a small white stain to the rear cover. The spine is faded and stained. ix, [iii] & 323 pages, illustrated with a color frontispiece & 7 color plates by E. J. Detmold. The front hinge is cracked opposite the frontispiece. There is evidence of slight early worming to the front margins of pages 145-174, not affecting the text. There is some scattered foxing to the preliminary leaves and a few pages of text. A good reading copy. <p>First American edition.
