Photographs taken by Tabor of San Francisco and Spooner of Stockton. 224 pages, the majority of which pertain to the SF & SJV RW, with listing of subscribers and stockholders [with number of shares purchased], maps and contents pages. Numerous photographs of stockholders, subscribers, and officers, and scenes along the San Juaquin Valley. The San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railway existed from 1895 to 1901 when it was incorporated into the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Pages 224 pp.8vo. 3/4 leather binding, tooled in gilt. Green cloth over boards. Marbled end papers. First edition. Black & white photographs throughout. Maps showing the route from Stockton to Bakersfield. Rocq 16555. This copy with Hawaiian sugar magnate Claus Spreckles’ bookplate and James D. Phelan’s bookplate attached to front paste down end paper. Phelan was Mayor San Francisco and a U. S. Senator and served on the Board of Directors for the Railway. This copy comes was an original cancelled stock certificate for ten shares of stock in The San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railway dated May 20, 1895. Near fine condition with only a tiny bit of rubbing to leather extremities and gilt edges tarnished. Dawson’s Bookshop tag pasted to rear paste down end paper and what is probably Dawson’s catalog listing pasted to front paste down end paper between the book plates. Stock certificate in fine condition with “Cancelled” stamp across the center.
