Small quarto, 189 x 143 mms., pp. [xii]. 323 [324 blank, 325 - 335 index, 336 blank]; [xxiv], 307 [308 blank, 309 - 316 index], with second title-page at end of first part, recently rebound in attractive blind-panelled calf, red morocco label. A very good copy. "Bacon's greatest service to anti-Stuart causes came in the form of a political tract entitled An Historical Discourse of the Uniformity of the Government of England, which was probably written using notes collected by John Selden. Published in 1647 to justify the Long Parliament's war against Charles I, with a continuation appearing in 1651, the work has been referred to as 'the English Francogallia' (Burgess, 96). Contemporaries of various political leanings would have agreed. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 4to, 215 x 177 mms., pp. iv, [vi] - xvii [xviii Errata], 674 [675 - 676 adverts], recently recased in quarter calf, morocco label, marbled boards; title-page soiled and creased, ex-library with handwritten library ownership on first page of text. The erratic pagination is a printing error. Thomas Somerville (1741 - 1830) began collecting materials for his historical works in 1782, and this volume was preceded by his History of Political Transactions and of Parties from the Restoration of King Charles II to the Death of King William III (1792). A native of Hawick, Roxburghshire, he received a honorary D. D. from St. Andrews in 1793 and was also elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was also the author of My Own Life and Times, first published in 1861, and an invaluable guide to intellectual and literary life in Edinburgh in the latter part of the 18th century. Paisley: Printed and Sold by Alex Wier...and by the Author, 1782. Small 4to, 208 x 182 mms., pp. viii, vi, 108, 334, 5 [6 blank], contemporary sheepskin, red leather label; tear in 2F1 (pp. 221 - 222) with loss of seven words on p. 221, very slight marginal worming of last few leaves, top and base of front joint cracked, top and base of spine chipped, binding a little dried. Crawfurd (c. 1695 - 1748) published this work in Edinburgh in 1710. Another edition of Semple's edition was published in 1818. He was employed by Simon Fraser to find support for Fraser's claim to the barony of Lovat, and though he carried out a lot of research for Fraser, he was never paid for it, even though Crawfurd's research was directly responsible for the success of Fraser's claim.

Oxford, Printed at the Theater..., 1705, 1706. 3 volumes in 6. 8vo, 192 x 128 mms., pp. [iv], 288, [2], 289 - 720; [x], 466, [2], 467 - 753 [754 blank]; [xvi], 364 [2], 365 - 773 [774 blank, 775 - 849 Index, 850 - 852 blank], engraved portrait in each volume, contemporary panelled calf, paper labels; joints a bit worn, but firm, and generally a good to very good set, with the ownership inscription of A. Burnaby, St. John's College, Cambridge, 1722 in each volume and his autograph on each title-page, and the bookplate of Barbara de Selincourt (whose portrait as a young girl was memorably painted by Herbert James Draper) on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. Andrew Burnaby (1702 - 1776), who apparently acquired this set in 1722 when he was a student at St. John's College, named his son, the church of England clergyman and traveller, Andrew Burnaby (1732 - 1812) as well. The only clue to the juxtaposition of these two texts, the first extracted from Gibbon's Decline and Fall is a note on the verso of the title-page: "This composite volume contains the graphic pages of Gibbon, and the quaint details of Ockley - authorities on the subject, and carefully edited by A. Murray."

London: Baldwin and Cradock, 1829. FIRST EDITION. Tall 8vo, 217 x 133 mms., pp. vii [viii], 288, printed in double columns, rather garishly rebound in half crushed red morocco, marbled boards, gilt spine, new end-papers; a rather upmarket binding for a cheaply printed book. The anonymous author, Frederick Malkin (1802-1830) was the second son of Benjamin Heath Malkin, the schoolmaster and promoter of William Blake. Malkin died at the age of 28, not living long enough to publish any other books. His text here is dense and thorough, and he seems to have put a lot of trouble, organisation, and research into the work, and it was reprinted several times.

Dilly..., 1784. 8vo, 204 x 123 mms., pp. xii, 259 [260 Erratum], folding engraved map before title-page, which appears to be a cancel, contemporary tree sheepskin, spine neatly restored with gilt rules across spine. A very good copy. Ali Bey al-Kabir (1728 - 1773) rebelled against his Ottoman rulers in 1768. The Ottoman Porte of the title is a name for the central government of the Ottoman Empire. The author, who purports to be a teacher of Greek and located at no. 27 Compton Street, Soho, also claims to have know Ali Bey. The reviewer of the first edition of 1783 in The Monthly Review seems to be a little sceptical of this identity, but nevertheless asserts, "This authentic account of such a revolution as that accomplished by Ali Bey, written by a person who was occasionally an eye witness of it, and had, from his connections in the country, many opportunities of acquiring the best information concerning it, will always deserve the… Leer más

Small 12mo, 120 x 64 mms., pp. [xii], 294, 39 [40 - 93 Index, 94 blank], fine engraved title-page, contemporary red morocco, gilt panels on covers, spine ornately gilt in compartments, red morocco label, art nouveau bookplate on front paste-down end-paper; front cover detached, but an attractive copy. This is the first Elzevir edition to have Vossius' dedication to Thure Bielke.

Large, thick folio, 309 x 212 mms., [21 leaves, including final blank], 485 leaves printed recto and verso, with engraved vignette on title-page and a Giunti engraved vignette on colophon, later 18th century quarter vellum, marbled boards, black morocco; upper inner margin and lower portion of title-page neatly repaired, lower front hinge slightly cracked, margins of last leaf very slightly frayed, corners worn, but a very good copy of this popular imprint. This edition was prepared by the Italian historian and classicist, Jacopo Nardi (1476 - 1563). Titus Livius, as the historian is formally known, composed his Ab urbe condita in the years 27 to 15 B. Andrews…, 1793. 12mo (in 6s), pp. 202, contemporary sheepskin, red leather label, gilt spine; front joint cracked, but a very good copy, with the bookplate of the "Wilbraham Wesleyan Academy Libray" on the front paste-down end-paper The so-called "Dedication" berates Gibbon for his representation of Christianity in the Decline and Fall. [London]: Albion Press printed: By and for James Cundee..., 1805. 12mo, pp. 357 [358 adverts], contemporary tree calf, gilt spine, black morocco label; some war to extremities, but a good copy. Bigland (1750 - 1832) was a prolific author, and this was his second book. First published it 1804, it elicited this comment from the July, 1804 issue of the British Critic: "Mr. Bigland displays in this volume a well-cultivated and comprehensive mind. His style is generally correct though not highly polished; his information is extensive; and the many pertinent remarks and inferences, with which he has enriched this summary of general history, meet our cordial approbation."

London: Printed for the Benefit of A Charitable Institution at Bath, and sold by J. Robson and W. Clarke..., 1788. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 205 x 120 mms., pp. [ii], 192, [3], 4 - 100, 2 folding engraved maps, contemporary lightly speckled calf, red leather label; binding very slightly dried but a very good to near fine copy. This work by Thomas Bowlder (1754 - 1825) was one of his earliest publications, written to chronicle the Prussian army's campaign against the Dutch. Commenting on the work in 1788, The Monthly Review was a bit sniffy: "These Letters appear to have been hastily written , and without any great prospect of awakening attention....," concluding, however, on a slightly less grudging note: "he is nevertheless a sensible and intelligent man, as may be gathered from several observations in his book; and has, undoubtedly, the merit of having given us an authentic detail of facts, which may prove highly useful to the historian...."

Paris [L. Billaine] 1675. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 142 x 84 mms., pp. [4], 5 - 312, in three parts, with separate title-page for each part, contemporary vellum (soiled); text block pulling away from binding at hinges, title-page (part one) with paper strip recto and verso obscuring "Reyne" in title, notes in pencil on recto of front free end-paper. A modest copy. This was the first book that Pierre Le Pesant de Boisguilbert (1646 - 1714) published; he was later to achieve distinction as an economist. His first important work on economics, Le Detail de la France, appeared in 1695. In the preface, he alludes to representations of Mary by George Buchanan, whose mendacities were published in 1571, and the Jesuit Nicolas Caussin, whose La Cour Sainte (1624) represents Mary as a persecuted innocent in contrast to the cold-hearted and heretical queen, Elizabeth.
