The front wrapper reads "Extracted from the Annual Report of the Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries for 1884." This is one of the earliest monographs by Jordan who began his publication career in 1876. This significant monograph is much cited in ichthyologic literature. This copy is from the research library of ichthyologist Albert W. Herre with his signature on the front wrapper and title page. The front wrapper is inscribed: "To Earl S. Herald from Albert W. There is an old circular blind stamp of the Field Columbian Museum Library on the first title page. On the title page of the second paper is an old ink-stamp of Carnegie Museum and the small name stamp of ichthyologist Robert Anderson. There are no other library marks or any other ownership marks. Rare work.
