The front wrapper reads "Extracted from the Annual Report of the Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries for 1884." This is one of the earliest monographs by Jordan who began his publication career in 1876. This significant monograph is much cited in ichthyologic literature. This copy is from the research library of ichthyologist Albert W. Herre with his signature on the front wrapper and title page. The front wrapper is inscribed: "To Earl S. Herald from Albert W. The Sciaenidae are a family of fish commonly called drums or croakers in reference to the repetitive throbbing or drumming sounds they make. A second paper by John Ryder is bound in at the end: "On the value of the Fin-Rays and their characteristics of development in the classification of the fishes, together with remarks on the theory of degeneration," pp. 71-82 (1886). There is an old circular blind stamp of the Field Columbian Museum Library on the first title page. On the title page of the second paper is an old ink-stamp of Carnegie Museum and the small name stamp of ichthyologist Robert Anderson. There are no other library marks or any other ownership marks. Full black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, 4o. This is the original Ph.D. dissertation that is signed by all five committee members on the title page; Carl D. Riggs was the Committee Chair. This copy is warmly inscribed by the author to Richard A. Goff, one of the other committee members.

Mitteilungen aus dem Zoologischen Staatsinstitut und Zoologischen Museum in Hamburg, volume 42 and 44. This work documents the fishes collected on a two-year expedition to German Melanesia and to the Caroline and Marshall Islands in Micronesia. The text is in German. No ownership marks though there is a number written on the front cover of Part 1. Rare work.

This volume examines the role that John Quincy Adams played in the negotiation of the Treaty of Ghent that ended the War of 1812. There were numerous issues dealt with in this treaty among them was American access to the Mississippi River.
