(Cape Town, Longman, 1952). 8vo, green boards, pictorial dustwrapper somewhat soiled and edgeworn, pronounced foxing to endpapers, past owner's name inside front board, pp. x + 212, including statistical summary of the tour. Moderate foxing throughout, fair condition. "During their visit to the British Isles and France, the 1951-2 Springboks made for themselves a reputation which has seldom been surpassed by any rugby football touring team. They played thirty-one matches and were victorious in thirty of them - including the five international matches against Ireland, Wales, England, France and Scotland. In the game against Scotland, in fact, the score was 44 points to nil, the largest margin ever achieved in a recognised international match." Memories of the glory days of South African rugby. .

"Futebol Nation is the story of both sides of Brazilian football: its brilliance and its miseries, with the light they shine on the injustices of Brazilian life; and, just occasionally, the example it offers of a society that might do justice to Brazil's conviviality and creativity rather than its brutality and conservatism." .

Four photographs (between 160 x 205 mm and 137 x 203 mm) of rugby league football action. Three of the photographs are certainly of the encounter between Great Britain and France in East London on 27 July 1957, and were developed by the studio of H. A. Klausner. The fourth photograph has the hand-stamp of Barrett's News Photos, Johannesburg, and is from a training match of the same period. Largely on the back of Tom van Vollenhoven's exploits for St Helens after the Springbok star switched codes, there were efforts to launch rugby league football in South Africa during the 1950s. Three exhibition games between Great Britain and France were arranged. Although at least one source claims that the final game, scheduled for East London, did not take place, these photographs prove otherwise. The players depicted are wearing the kits of France and England, and penned notes on the reverse of two of the photographs read "Rugby League / East London 27/7/57: Great Britain scores to make 17…

Good. "Handsome, charismatic, brave and daring - these were some of the qualities that made HO de Villiers the world's most exciting rugby fullback in the late 1960s, but if there was one special quality above all others that made him South Africa's most talked about rugby player of his era, it was almost certainly his genius for succeeding gloriously by defying the traditionalists and doing precisely what they said he shouldn't be doing." .

The name is instantly recognised the world over. His iconic status rivals that of South Africa's greatest all-time folk heroes. This biography is an attempt to expose what made Hansie the man he was, and to trace some of the tender lines of a remarkable physical, emotional and spiritual journey cut short. Covering his life story, it is important to know that Hansie's entire close family and circle of friends supported this book and their views and insights into his life form the basis of it. To ensure a well-balanced story some of Hansie's harshest, most outspoken critics were also interviewed. Hansie, of course, was magnificent. But like all men and women, he was flawed, vexed by ambivalence. It is the marring of greatness that makes for such a compelling human story.…

"Colin Trader has taken the field to present a kaleidoscope of the history of soccer over the past 104 years in the Eastern Cape with Port Elizabeth as the focal point. Starting with the pomp and ceremony and magnificent trophies of the imperial era; into the glory days of amateur football with its emphasis on fair play, pride and honour; the advent of the professional game in mid-century; and finally, at the close of the century, the use of the game to underline the political transformation in the world and this country." .

Dustwrapper torn and edgeworn, with loss; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; tape marks to endpapers; some moderate foxing and browning. Good. "The story of the 1955 South African Cricket Tour of England reads almost like a fairy tale. Two Tests down and three to go; it seemed for all the world that the Series was safely in the hands of the England Team. How the South African side levelled the Tests, and almost snatched a victory in the deciding match, is graphically told in this book. No one knows the background of this Tour better than the author, who has given more than just an insight into the matches played. The calls made upon the tourists off the field, travel incidents and all the inside happenings of their five-month tour, have been recounted in a forthright manner." .

"When Jake White took over as Springbok coach in 2004, few supporters - and even fewer Springbok rugby players - could ever have believed that the squad he would build over four years would bring home the Webb Ellis Trophy. In Black and White is the gripping autobiography of only the second man to coach the Springboks to World Cup glory. White's story is characterised by intense determination to succeed against all odds, from a troubled childhood to his eventual elevation to arguably the toughest job in world sport. White takes readers into rugby's inner sanctum, where politicking and hidden agendas sometimes supersede the best interests of the sport, and relates the incredible highs and desperate lows of being part of the Springbok set-up. "His enormous talent, for years the preserve of Western Province, Derbyshire and later Border, was suddenly and spectacularly unleashed at the World Cup in 1992. And there could be no more fitting epitaph to a distinguished career than the century scored at the second Test at Headingley in 1994. As an innings, it meant a great deal - to his team, his country, and to the man himself. Here was a 39-year-old legend fulfilling his destiny - not with bitterness at the wasted years, but with all the unbridled joy of the nine-year-old who had scored a century for Selborne against Dale 30 years earlier. This vibrant book is more than just a limited look at the brilliant career of…

Williams has been blessed with enough talents for half a dozen careers. Now a successful doctor who intends to specialize in sports injuries, his first success was as a singer, much in demand for his rendering of 'O for the wings of a dove' which he gave with an innocence many would not associate with the aggressive performances he was later to give on the rugby field. At seventeen he won the Wimbledon Junior Tennis title, by which time he was also playing in the Glamorgan Youth Orchestra as violinist. At nineteen, after learning his skills as a rugby player in the harsh school of Welsh rugby, he won his first full Welsh cap against Scotland in 1969. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, so that now only Barry John and Gareth Edwards are better known to rugby followers throughout the…

To examine that fame and to look again at the successes and adversities of his wonderful career as a cricketer is to be conscious more and more of the impalpability of his kind of art." .

'Karate - the way of "empty hands" - is a form of unarmed combat that had its origins in India and China many hundreds of years ago. Beginning with a fascinating account of its history, Rob Marsh goes on to describe the various styles of karate that are practised in southern Africa today. Then in simple, easy-to-understand language he explains the underlying principles behind this increasingly popular sport, its stances, defensive and attacking techniques, and set sequences of moves or "kata". He includes a chapter on body-conditioning; on competition karate, a relatively new phenomenon; on tamashiwari, the…

"Throughout, he has endured as much criticism as praise but in times and places when lesser men would have walked away, Wessels has stood his ground, gutsed it out ... and prevailed. The game of cricket has been played by many batsmen with more natural talent, by many who have provided greater excitement and by many with more flair, but by very few as brave. Why spend a year writing a biography of such a capable but unflamboyant cricketer? Because, through the story of his career, Wessels proves an eternal truth: that no matter how dark the…

(Cape Town, Zebra Press, 2001). 230 x 150 mm; laminated pictorial wraps, slightly worn; pp. (viii) + 237; colour photographs. Very good condition. "Business tycoon, political maverick, rugby supremo. Louis Luyt's shadow has loomed large over South African life for decades. Max du Preez follows Luyt's rise from poor railway clerk to multi-millionaire, his reign over South African rugby, the triumph of the 1995 World Cup, and the moment he made legal history by taking Nelson Mandela to court. Drawing from previously unpublished documents, court transcripts and interviews with Luyt's old friends and foes, this is a behind-the-scenes account of a highly controversial figure. It is a story of intrigue upon intrigue, of back-stabbing and intense power struggles, of big money and big egos, interwoven with the fast and radical changes in South Africa's political scenery. For anyone interested in sport, business or politics, this book is a must." .

"As a public figure, Pancho Gonzales has fascinated both sportsmen and the general public since his first appearance on the court. The myths that surround him are legion, and yet these legends have grown and developed in spite of Pancho, for there are few contemporary athletes who shun publicity as actively as he does. In Man With A Racket Gonzales reveals the facts behind the legends and the result is a story remarkable for its candor and honesty." .

For his assessments of cricketers of an earlier generation he has studied the history of the game and gone to good judges with first-hand information on his subjects to build up warm, penetrating and balanced portraits of some of the greatest names cricket has ever known. On modern players and administrators he is, as usual, trenchant and well informed: his evaluations - of Ian Craig as Captain of Australia; of tendencies in modern cricket-writing, and of the present control of cricket in Australia - should make a deep impression on our thinking about cricket." .

"An architect who paints as his hobby, Claassen is in many ways an enigma, a contradiction of the pre-conceived image of a rugby player whose roots can be traced to the Afrikaner hinterland of Northern Transvaal. He is scholarly and intelligent and keenly questioning of the world around him. His first-class rugby career lasted for 12 years; through the calm days of Northern Transvaal's golden era until he moved to Natal in 1980 and became the captain of the Springboks in 1981. He was an enquiring witness during one of the most eventful periods in South African rugby history and is therefore eminently well…
