Wonderful full leather Scottish Wheel Binding, tooled all over in gold gilt. Very Good. Contains the 'graduation' thesis of Robert Dundas of Arniston, the younger from the University of Edinburgh. He was educated first at home and at school, and then at the University of Edinburgh. In 1733, he proceeded to Utrecht University, then celebrated for the teaching of Roman law. Lord Dundas (1713-1787) served as Solicitor General for Scotland from 1742 to 1746; as Lord Advocate from 1754 to 1760; and as Member of Parliament for Midlothian from 1754 to 1761. He was Lord President of the Court of Session from 1760 to 1787, losing his popularity for giving his casting vote against Archibald Douglas in the famous Douglas Cause. ESTC T196921. Francis Lieber (1800-1872), an educator & political activist, was born and educated in Germany, emigrating to Boston in 1827. Not long after his arrival in the U.S., Lieber approached the firm of Carey Lea & Carey (of philadelphia) proposing a number of possible literary projects. Henry Carey agreed to sponsor an encyclopedia. It was a massive undertaking. Lieber modeled the work on Brockhaus' 'Conversations Lexikon' with appropriate portions adapted to its American audience. Publication of the original parts issue began in 1829.
