Firm in its binding but with spotting to the covers and heavy fade to the spine strip. 346 pp. with index. Four engraved plates. A guide to descrription of the ideal face and figure, how to achieve it and how to maintain it. The authors, both Philadelphia- based M.D.s, cover each part of the body (neck and bust, head, face and expressions, the ear, the nose, hair, beard, skin and complexion, etc) and note various characteristics as well as common malformations, actions and substances to improve each, etc.

Small octavo in brick-colored cloth spine letetred in gilt and front cloth lettered and decorated in black. 111 pp. Very scarce work that postulates that artificially created sturctural enviornments would be beneficial in the curing of certian diseases, particulary pulmonary consumption (tuberculosis). Shove was inspired London's Crystal Palace and by the effects of greenhouses on botanical specimens. The second half of the book details how such a glass structure would be constructed, heated, etc. A solidly very good example, some waer at the extremities, edge wear spine extremities.

Scarce in any edition, an important and prescient work on the dangers of addition and "dope trafficking" aimed at adults who would help and educate their teenagers. Very good. Issued without dust jacket.

Copyright page states only 1871 but this, the "Fifteenth Thousand" was published circa 1896. Patterned endpapers. 159 pp. A tight, very good copy, gilt lettering bright, some light spotting to the cloth. 19th century work on childbirth with various methods to make it as painless as possible. With chapters on preparations for motherhood, exercise and occupation during pregnancy, the bath (espicially the sitz-bath), painless parturition from a fruit diet, the mind during pregnancy, ailments, anesthetics during labor and a comment on female physicians, etc.

Original patterned cloth with paper spine label. (1) 287 pp plus index, which is erroneously paginated 290, 391-395, 296; 12 pp. publisher's ads at rear of which only the last four are paginated, (2). The original cloth has some staining and spotting, splitting to the rear gutter and wear and loss to the spine extremities; spine label is rubbed and stained. A previous owner's signature has been excised from the top edge og the title page (not affecting the title) and there is an ink notation on the exposed upper margin of the next page "The Philosophy of Sleep !!!". Scattered foxing to the text block, some old ownership notations on the front free endpaper and a 19th century bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. First inside page is a prospectus statement and order blank, then 52 pp. plus a 20-page section of advertisements at rear, many illustrated with engravings of denatl and medical equipment and supplies. Thick 8vo. in darl green cloth stamped in gilt. lxv + 737 pp. with index, appendix "Dr. Ferrier's Experimantal Researches On The Brain". One full page and 16 small engravings in the text. The Fourth Edition with a new preface. Very good, modest wear at the extremities, front hinge neatly repaired. William Benjamin Carpenter (1813-1885) was a British physiologist and zoologist; his early work in marine zoology led to critical advances in that field in the 1860s. In 1853, his book "The Use and Abuse of Alcoholic Liquors" was among the first to treat alcoholism as a disease. Carpenter is also considered one of the founder of the theory of "adaptive subconscious" in the field of which this book is considered seminal and classic.

Cogent argument that laws of the time regarding the dissemination of litertaure dealing with sexuality were far stricter than those dealing with actual, physcial sexual acts. Very good; mailing folds and even soiling. This was a favorite topic of Schroeder whose paper "What Is Criminally 'Obscene'" expands on his ideas.

Very good. No dust jacket. Though first published in 1935 , revised in 1938, 1943 1ne 1959, a remarkably uncommon guide to the rhythm method of birth control. The author a medical specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, was the editor emetitus of the American Journal of Surgery. The work offers general chapters on marriage and childbearing (including "the moral alternative to contraceptives"), physical matters like the egg and the male cell, menstruation, motherhood, then proceeds to guide the reader through how to apply the "modern method of birth control", charts of normal and irregular menstrual cycles, "the thermometer method", infertitlity and its treatment, etc.
