Owner name of George Goetz dated 1939 on the front endpaper well above Hesse's inscription with a small stain at the bottom corner well below Hesse's inscription. A few marginal pencil notations, likely by Goetz. Some aging to the paper but at least Very Good and very scarce when signed. Thin octavo (5-3/4" x 8-3/4") bound in the publisher's heavy brown wraps with black lettering on the front cover and a later cloth tape hand-lettered spine; [1-8], 9-146, [-147], [1, blank], [2, publisher's ads]. The true First Edition with the text in German of one of this Nobel Prize winner's two famous and important novels, the other being of course STEPPENWOLF. This copy is SIGNED in ink by the author with a brief inscription on the front endpaper. Hesse based this book on the early life of Gautama Buddha. The story of a son rebelling against his father's teaching and traditions and eventually finding true enlightenment resonated with those maturing in the 1960s… Leer más

Contents bright and fresh. In our experience one of the most difficult books of the press to locate in fine condition. Still a Very Good or better copy in a close to Fine slipcase. John Held, Jr.. Large octavo (7-1/4" x 10-1/2") bound in half green calfskin leather stamped with a fish design in gold and printed cloth sides. The third book of the press, designed by William A. Kittredge and printed under his supervision at the Lakeside Press. Introduction by Carl Van Doren. Illustrated with linoleum cuts by John Held, Jr. Of a total of 1500 copies SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page, this copy is not numbered (in place of the number is written in ink "Office Copy") and bears the Club's blindstamp stating it is one of 15 presentation copies.

Mayer, president of MGM Studios, commending Mayer for the Studios' contracting of 5 refugee writers in order to allow their immigration to the United States to escape death during World War II: Alfred Doeblin, Alfred Polgar, Hans Lustig, Wilhelm Speyer, and Walter Mehring. In part: "It is not my custom to interfere in matters which do not directly concern me; however I should like to take the liberty of presenting to you with confidence a matter which is close to my heart, and which is a source of worry for me as well many other well-meaning people.
