ALLONBY ENGLAND. Fair. 1807. On offer is a superb early 19th Century mathematics and complex arithmetic ciphering book. There are over 320 pages of text and titles in a lovely calligraphic hand including a folding table all in pen and ink. Identified as having belonged to the Costin Family of Allonby England this is believed to be a school book from the highly noted Quaker School at Wigton dated by paper watermarked 1807. This book was a massive effort by the unidentified Costin Family member but unique for the breadth and depth of the mathematical equations and complexity of the problems. The book stands as a testament to the quality of education at the Wigton School. The school book is in a very well handled state detached from the worn binding the contents are now loose the sections although individually sewn are coming away from each other. Some of the 8 x 10 inch initial pages maybe missing, there is old damp/water staining to some but not all of the pages but overall Fair+.… Leer más

Bourges, France. Good with no dust jacket. Ephemera. On offer are two Pastoral Letters from 1807 and 1808 that were written by the Archbishop of Bourges, arie-Charles-Isidore de Mercy, immediately following the French Revolution, which were dangerous times for many clergy. De Mercy was the first Archbishop appointed to Bourges following the French Revolution. The diocese was poor and understaffed when he took over. Among the many issues de Mercy had to contend with in his new appointment was the condition of the diocese’s major seminary or teaching facility for educating priests. This was the subject of two of his Pastoral Letters. Pastoral letters are open letters written to clergy and often to all members of the church (as this one was) in a particular jurisdiction. Such letters were frequently sent out at particular times of the year, coinciding with ecclesiastical seasons, such as Lent or Christmas. North Shields, England, 1808. Extremely rare handwritten letter of great interest to collectors or researchers of ENGLISH QUAKER LIFE. ROBERT SPENCE, Quaker banker, ALS, North Shields, dated 1808. Three pages, 4to., plus integral address leaf. To his future wife's father, Robert Foster, Hebblethwaite Hall, near Ledberge, Kendal. This letter is the nexus of a correspondence that will last nearly five decades between these two English Quakers - bound by blood, religion and soon matrimony - Spence begs to be allowed to visit Hebblethwaite now that Foster has learned of his attachment to Mary. Very sensitively written and in many ways a proposal of marriage but much more than the simple face value of the words may be read between the lines as Spence appears very defensive for not having spoken to Foster first. Italy: None, 1808. Two rare documents, purple-stained, partly-printed, ink signed, dated, 1808, each headed IL PREFETTO E ASSISTENTI, DELLA VENERABILE CONGREGAZIONE E COMPAGNIA, DEL SANTISSIMO SACRAMENTO, ERETTA NELLA PARROCCHIA DI SANT'EULALIA DEL QUARTIERE DELLA MARINA.The ink has really lightened on one of these except for the signature. The original file folder contained a very old collection of foreign autographs and documents which indicates: "Spanish War - rare watermarks - unusually good." Documents relating to the 1808 - 1814 Spanish War, or the Peninsula War as is called Spain's War of Independance are very, very scarce. Four bold signatures and the fact that it is dated squarely at the beginning of the conflict make for a very interesting pair of documents that require further research. . Autograph. Manuscript. France. Good with no dust jacket. 1809. Ephemera. On offer is a personal communication to a member of one France’s highest court in the early years of Napoleon’s reign. The letter is from a Section or Department of the Conseil d’Etat (Council of State) , the French governmental body that acts both as legal adviser of the executive branch and as the supreme court for administrative justice. It was established in 1799 by Napoleon. The letter advises one of the Counsellors that a file relating to urban transport has been forwarded to the appropriate Minister. LILLE FRANCE, 1809. On offer is the original handwritten discharge papers of Lieutenant Lefevre of the 51eme Regiment a Ligne. Folio sheet details the Lieutenant's service from 1776 through 1809. Effective service grades, Campaigns, pension details and his final medical status are all reported. The soldier's CV covers 85% of the page and in the bottom 15% is the medical report as detailed by the senior surgeon to the Corps. Very interesting, very detailed in very good shape save for the usual folds, shallow creases and fault to the top left where a pin hole has been made. Overall G+.. Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. HARFORD MARYLAND. Good. 1809. On offer are a super pair [2] of 1809 manuscript cypher/mathematics books handwritten by David Wiley who, casual research finds, was a farmer and veteran of the War of 1812. It appears that David was born in Hopewell Pennsylvania and later of Harford Maryland, near Baltimore. Book 1 measuring 13" x 8", has a marbled softcover which is lightly worn, and contains about 70 pages that are all written in a nice but sometimes uneven calligraphic hand. Book 2 has about 59 pages [last 2-3 pages show 1812 trade transactions using his learned skills], covers absent and slightly small than Book 1 as such. Equations include: apothecary weights, avoirdupois weights, troy weights, promiscuous questions, addition of federal money, vulgar fractions, interest, insurance commission and brokerage, compound interest, barter, fellowship, foreign exchange+++ Both books have faults: staining, chipping, some page losses but hardly any loss of text. France. Good with no dust jacket. 1809. Ephemera. On offer is a fine example of a proposal from a physician to a French government ministry along with a follow-up letter, both dating from 1809. The proposal is from a French doctor, Doctor Dufour, to the Ministry of Finance, requesting them to consider paying for the publication of his treatise on the study and treatment of venereal disease. The recipient of the treatise is a bureaucrat named Monsieur Bouconvillier. The proposal is dated April 17th, 1809. It begins: Lorsque je ais l'honneur de vous adreser l'introduction de l' ouvrage que je prius la liberte de vous envoyer aujourd'hui je vous disois que il'y avait beaucoup de maladies virulent qui [] tres frequentes n'en sont pas moins inconnus a cause des diffirens curaitires quelles presentent…[Translation: Having had the honour of sending you the introduction to the work I pray the liberty to send you today, I tell you that there are many virulent diseases… Leer más

GIBSON NEW HAMPSHIRE [?]. Fair. 1811. On offer is a very interesting, original manuscript, dated 1811, being a very complex mathematics cyphering book handwritten by Ross Smiley. [We have been advised that Smiley was a professor and from New Hampshire though we can find no indication in the manuscript. There is a section titled "Of distances took from Gibson" which should help confirm the locale.] There are 92 full pages containing, logarithms, trigonometry, geometry and other complex mathematical problems, equations and solutions with many drawings. Problems such as how "To find how high a ?????? at Philadelphia might be raised into the atmosphere and how far the sight must extend to see London ....." There are stains on some pages, the covers absent and 2 of the 3 text blocks are holding by threads. Pages approx. 9" x 12". NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA LA PHILADELPHIA PA, 1812. On offer is a super, original handwritten manuscript autograph latter signed [ALS] and dated January 21, 1812 New Orleans Louisiana by a Georgia sugar plantation owner John Joseph Coiron to his friend and associate Samuel Coates in Philadelphia. Research finds that Mr. Coiron was a noted businessman, slave-owner and entrepreneur whose portrait hangs in the Louisiana State Museum. His wife, Zelime Gautier is buried in New Orleans. Mr. Coates is also famous in his own right having been very prominent in Philadelphia. The letter mentions the plantation owner's 30 day journey from Savannah with his entire family through Creek Indian territory to New Orleans, the costs of his newly purchased plantation, the city of Washington, etc. This is one sheet written of both sides. Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky: Circuit Court, Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1813. Non-Book. On offer is an 1813 ADS, being a summons to appear at Hardin Circuit Court by Ben Helm (1779-1858) , who was Clerk of Hardin County Court and Circuit Court at the time. It was in relation to a conviction against Christopher Bush (1730-1813) and Ichabod Radley (1774-1847). The two men owed damages to Joseph Stover, another Kentucky pioneer. SEE BIO NOTES ON HELM and BUSH FOLLOWING THE LISTING. The summons refers to a March 13, 1809 judgment against Bush and Radley, handed down by Judge Stephen Ormsby (1759-1844) and assistant judge Samuel Haycraft (1752-1823). SOUTH HAMPTON SEABROOK NEW HAMPSHIRE. Good. 1813. On offer is a super manuscript relic of early 19th century New Hampshire government and judicial proceedings and some legislative acts and even a protest being the original manuscript daybook of Abel Brown of Southampton, New Hampshire. He identifies himself as a witness to proceeding and recorder of such. There are a number of signatures and initials of other witnesses, signers to Abel's writings etc. Handwritten notes dating from 1813 through 1824 over 24 pages of writings includes military matters, building roads, an apprenticeship agreement, a protest over land taken from the town of South-Hampton to the town of Seabrook, letters to the Governor and more. On offer is an excellent example of a civilian requisition order issued by Louis XVIII’s government in the aftermath of Napoleon’s first surrender to the coalition of European countries that he had fought for years. The author of this document is Constantin-Marie-Louis-Léon de Bouthillier-Chavigny. This order deals with the requisition and payment of supplies. It dated December 15th, 1814. Just nine months earlier, Paris had surrendered to the Coalition armies after Napoleon’s string of defeats in the 1814 campaign in north-east France. That was Napoleon's final campaign of the War of the Sixth Coalition. As a result of this, Napoleon had surrendered, abdicated the throne of France and gone into exile on the island of Elba. France, 1815. On offer is a super small one page note on a folded half page detailing the names of several men accused of desertion. It appears to be signed by three [3] individuals (Hubert, Pourihier, LeCoyeor ?) with a side note that the action is approved by the Chef de Battalion. Dated 19 June 1815, Garde Nationale, 1st Battalion 5th Company is handwritten as a heading. [HISTORICAL NOTE: Less than 3 weeks later the King was returned to power.] VG.. Autograph. France. Good with no dust jacket. 1815. Ephemera. On offer is an excellent example of a medical discharge note from the famed French Necker Hospital in early 19th century France. This medical discharge note is written on the letterhead of “HOPITAL DE MADAME NECKER”. The letter is a medical release form from the hospital. It confirms that a Madame Harrcourt was a patient at the hospital: Le Medicine en chef, soussigue, certifie que Mme Marie Madelaine Harrcourt age de 70 ans entree au dit hospital le 24me juillet 1814 [ ] pour une [] ...[Translation: The Chief Medical Officer, undersigned, certifies that Mrs. Marie Madelaine Harrcourt, 70 years old, entered the said hospital on July 24th 1814 [ ] for a []...]. It goes on to say that she is an invalid who will need constant care. It recommends he be moved to a hospice that can provide such care. The letter is signed by Doctor N. Hanquent. On offer are three [3] sheets of manuscript details of the rations [food, wood, wine], lodgings, troops, communes, horses, forage, food-stuffs etc., detailed by Loppin de Gemeaux the noted Mayor of Gemeaux known for his erudition, intelligence and business acumen. He was the very close friend of Voltaire and Rousseau. Two sheets are mounted on one 19 x 16 black card stock and a smaller board for the third list. On offer is an excellent collection of reference letters for applicants to replace the Director of The NeckerEnfants Malades Hospital, one of Frances foremost hospitals. From the context of the letters, it appears that in 1816, the Director of the Necker Hospital, one Monsieur Mougenot, had passed away. A number of applications for his position were received. These letters speak to the applications of three doctors who are seeking appointment to the position. Each extols the virtues of the relevant applicant and offers an insight into the medical practices of the times. There are also references to le Vicomte or Viscount. Indeed, there are letter addressed to simply Le Vicomte. Context suggests that this could be a reference to François Alexandre Frédéric de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, duc de Rochefoucauld. There is no direct evidence but Rochefoucauld was a very prominent social reformer of the time. He was active in the administration… Leer más

Paris, France. Good with no dust jacket. 1816. Ephemera. On offer is a very well written letter of reference for a French doctor in early 19th century France. The letter, although unsigned, appears to be sent from the Hopital de la Charite. It highly recommends a Doctor Chretien Lalame for a position at the Children’s Hospital of Paris. An excerpt follows: Le Doctor Chretien Lalame age de 44, medecin de la Faculte de Paris. Membre titulaire de l'Academie de Medecine, medecin ordinaire du 5em dispensaire, d'un des trois premier candidate designes par le Conseil General des hospices dans sa seance du 17 avril donner et presentes a son excellence le ministre de l'interior pour remplir la place de Medecine de l'hospital des Enfants , demande celle du Medicin suppliant de la Charite vacante par le deces de M. BALTIMORE, MARYLAND and DORCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, 1816. On offer is an fascinating original letter sent from Thomas Taylor, a well known privateer in Baltimore during the Spanish American wars of independence in Spanish America. The letter was sent to a Mr. Steven Badlam, Esq., of Dorchester, Massachusetts, dated “July 12, 1816” and signed “your humble servant.” It is a short account of three ships that had sunk north of Cape Ann in Massachusetts, containing treasure thought to be his, but instead taken by seemingly one of his men in his own ship. The letter states, in broken and misspelled English, that the “after sunk the vessels the Prize Master Man” has gone and “run away with the prize from me. They were taking by one of my crusers...a schooner of six guns.” Taylor is requesting any information about the man so that he can recapture the prize. The letters were written by a Monsieur de Laval. His first letter is a request to be considered for a position in a medical institution. The letter is addressed to Mathieu Jean Felicité de Montmorency, duc de Montmorency-Laval by his title. In his first letter, dated Aug 1st, 1816, de Laval outlines his past history in medicine: De Laval ancien chirurgien de terre et de mer des armies du Roy, membre et correspondent de la Societe Royale de Medecine de Marseille ...[Translation: De Laval former land and sea surgeon of the armies of the King, member and associate of the Royal Society of Medicine of Marseille…]He goes on to extol his qualities and how he would be suitable for the position he seeks.
