West was a prominent English orientalist and translator of Zoroastrian texts, who prepared the Pahlavi texts ('Marvels of Zoroastrianism') for Prof. Muller's 'Sacred Books of the East' series. Muller's monumental work is the English translation of essential sacred texts of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, and Islam. The Vendidad is an important cultural and ethical moral guide for Zoroastrians, a collection of texts including prayers, myths and religious observances. Two volumes bound in one, of the first American edition of a complete translation of the New Testament into French. This is the translation of Louis Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy, French priest best known for his 1667 to 1696 translation of the Bible, the most widespread French Bible in the 18th century, known as the Bible de Port Royal. 8vo. Vol I: vii, 403pp; Vol II: 5- 326pp, [1]p errata. Full brown gilt calf, gilt decorations at spine; title panel rubbed. Spine chipped at ends, boards rubbed. Tokyo: New Gospel Society Publishing House, 1910. Hardcover. Very good condition. Miyazaki was a self styled Japanese prophet who called himself the "Messiah Buddha" and who taught a mixture of Christianity and Buddhism and prophesied a world of peace, once unified by him, the Prophet. Presentation copy, signed by the author and the translator: "Presented to David Williams, Takahashi Goro. Engineer Lieut. Commander M. Fuimori (Timori?), I J N (Imperial Japanese Navy). With a full page letter signed by Miyazaki loosely inserted, dated 13th Feb. 1912. The letter, written in English, is addressed to Mr. Williams and thanks him for "your kind notice bestowed upon my religious work while you were in Japan, my country". Small 8vo, iv, 234pp. Gold gilt cloth. OCLC: 22639943.

1415. Very good overall. Text in Latin with decorated initial capitals and a vine and flower decoration in the upper and lower margins. The Initial capital in gold with additional blue & red decoration and include the letters N, U, C, S and B. Text on the verso also with decorated initial caps, but no flower and vine decoration. 4 1/8 x 6". Slt. smudge on lower left corner.

1885. Good + overall. Fiery Brooklyn preacher Thomas De Witt Talmage caricatured as a fireman, after his popular Tabernacle burned down for the third time. Printed color lithographed triptych caricature of the New York religious reformer, printed on three separate cards. Showing the crusader against vice in profile, with a fireman's helmet at his feet and a bugle in his hand, ready to call the public to attend services at his enormous Brooklyn central Presbyterian Church known as the "Tabernacle". Talmage (1832 - 1902) was a dramatic preacher and performer; attending his sermons became one of the most popular New York experiences of the 1870s. Each week Talmage preached to audiences in the thousands in the Brooklyn tabernacle, which burned down and was rebuilt 3 times up to 1894! Printed on 3 cards, each 7 x 3". Cards slightly marked; the top card with a perforation. Printed at base, "Copyright March 22nd, 188-" with final number worn away in corner.

It includes a three quarter column printed report on the Queensland missions, and a woodblock engraving of Maryborough, Queensland, showing the harbor with vessels at the dock (p229). The Kent, a British East Indian Company vessel bound for India in February 1825; loaded with passengers and tons of shot and shell she caught fire in the Bay of Biscay, and eventually exploded. The quick thinking and actions of Captain Cook, in command of the Cambria, bound from London to Mexico with members of the Anglo-Mexican company on board, saving the lives of 547 before the ship was lost. Scarce New York edition of this classic account, which we have not seen before. With a contemporary owner signature at the title page, Edmund H. Hart 1851. 16mo, 46 pp, publisher's advertisement [2]. Printed paper wrappers, with title in black at front wrapper, within ornately decorated garlanded border printed in green.
