The work covers the French Jewish artillery officer's years of imprisonment, most of it spent on Devil's Island in French Guiana, following his trial and conviction on charges of treason. It consists mainly of his personal journal and his correspondence with his wife. The Dreyfus affair sparked a national controversy, and following a passionate public campaign spearheaded by leading French artists and intellectuals including Émile Zola, he was given a second trial in 1899. Despite proof of his innocence, he was again found guilty but was offered a pardon and released.
