Original color lithographed map printed by Rand, McNally & Company, Engravers and published in HARDESTY'S HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA: SPECIAL VIRGINIA EDITION. 19 3/8 inches by 13 1/4 inches on a 21" X 14 1/2" sheet. The map depicts the Territory of Utah in its final form--large areas had been removed and ceded to Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska since Utah became a U. S. Territory in 1850. The issue of polygamy prevented statehood until it was finally granted in 1896. This map features railroads and topography and uses color to set off counties from each other. Unlike most atlas maps of the period, this map identifies most small towns. The map is guaranteed to be moe than 135 years old. Hungry Horse, Montana: Ace Powell, 1960. Original etching. 7 3/4 inches by 10 inches on artist paper measuring 11 inches by 15 inches. Signed and numbered (66/100) by the artist in pencil. Montana artist Ace Powell (1912-1978) was perhaps the most prolific artist of the American West in the 20th century. Strongly influenced by the artist Charles M. Russell, Powell created what he knew best, paintings, etchings, and sculptures of Montana life and scenery, cowboys, and the Blackfeet Indians. His works can be found in museums and private collections throughout the United States; an especially good selection is held by the Hockaday Museum in Kalispell, Montana, where Powell lived the last 13 years of his life. Image is 12 inches by 10 inches on a 13 5/8 " by 11 1/2" sheet. The map features topography, railroads, Indian reservations, cities, and small towns and uses outline color to set off counties from each other. It is guaranteed to be at least 135 years old. Denver, Colorado: William Henry Jackson, 1890. 3 7/8" by 6 1/4" Perhaps a contemporary print: certainly prior to 1897 when Jackson joined the Detroit Publishing Co. and turned his negatives over to the company. At that time the inventory number for "The Old Palace Santa Fe" was changed from 3012 (as on the photo offered here) to 08156, and Detroit Publishing Co. was added at lower right edge. A rare and highly sought-after western stereoview showing a group of Ute males in front of the photographer's studio on Pike's Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs circa 1875. Most of the men are holding weapons; one of them has both a Maynard Carbine (the first one with a folding sight) and a Colt Model 1860 army revolver. The image shows a view of the interior of the Palace Hotel in San Francisco: a courtyard on the ground level and 7 stories of hallways with columns and handrails; some rocking chairs can be seen around the perimeter of the courtyard. The mount is orange, with a pink verso that includes the stamp for G. Beach, the San Francisco stationer who originally sold the stereoview. Provenance: from the collection of Robert N. The Osage Oil & Refining Company, 1921. Original lithographed certificate for 10 shares of the capital stock for The Osage Oil & Refining Company, registered to T. B. O'Brien on January 21, 1921. Signed by the company's vice-president Charles E. Dietz and assistant secretary B. C. Guttler. As the name suggests, this was one of the oil companies paying Osage Indians in Osage County, Oklahoma for leases to drill for oil--as seen in the book and popular film, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON. As far as I can tell, the company generated more litgation than they did barrels of oil. The certificate is in very good condition: generally clean and bright, with light toning and short closed tears at the extremities of the two fold lines.. SIGNED. Original. Single Sheet. Very Good. Central City, Colorado: Charles Weitfle, 1879. Stereoview number 328 published by photographer Charles Weitfle in Central City, Colorado, circa 1879. Weitfle moved to Central City, Colorado and opened a photography studio in 1878. He quickly gained renown as his photographs of Colorado towns, mining, railroads, and natural wonders earned awards from the Colorado Industrial Association. The image in this stereoview is a natural rock formation in what is now Pike National Forest. The stereoview is in very good condition: clean and bright, with minimal soiling on the mount.. According to Wikipedia, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864) was an American geographer, geologist, and ethnologist, noted for his early studies of Native American cultures, as well as for his 1832 expedition to the source of the Mississippi River. He is also noted for his major six-volume study of Native Americans published in the 1850s.  The book offered here is his report on an 1821 expedition from Missouri through Illinois and Indiana into Michigan. There is heavy emphasis on lead mining in Missouri and on treatymaking with the Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes. Howes S196. Quite scarce. Detroit, Michigan: Detroit Publishing Company, 1899. 6 3/4 inches by 9 inches. Famed western American photographer William Henry Jackson spent a great deal of time taking pictures of Native Americans. Late in his career, he formed a relationship with the Detroit Publishing Company and turned over to them thousands of his negatives as well as those of other Western photographers.. Some of those negatives were printed as photochroms, which are color lithographs produced from black and white photographs. The negative from which this photochrom was produced has been attributed to Denver photographer Charles A. Nast by both the National Gallery and the Amon Carter Museum. This photochrom of a Ute family is beautifully colored and is a respectful portrayal of the Native American culture. It is in excellent condition. The image is one of fifty that were published for the Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, led by Lieutenant George M. Wheeler in 1871, 1872, 1873, and 1874. O'Sullivan was the official photographer for the 1874 expedition, and this stereoview depicts him and his camera in the ruins on the north bank of the San Juan River.
