Allan & Ferguson Single sided engraved ticket, approximately 90mm x 60mm in size, n.p. but probably Glasgow, n.d. c.1841? Lightly browned, slightly rubbed with some loss to imprint, minor soiling, light glue stains to corners of reverse, printers name is indistinct but appears to be Allan & Ferguson. A ticket for 'front seats' in the Assembly Rooms, Glasgow, which were designed by the brothers Robert and James Adam, and aimed to provide the city with a meeting place for dancing, music, reading and other cultural pursuits. The Library contained upwards of two thousand volumes, in every department of literature and science, from which every purchaser of a lecture ticket was entitled to read for twelve months. R.B. Hardy is advertised in 'The Phrenological Magazine' as giving a lecture on the "genius and character of Burns" at the Anderston Popular Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1841, so it is possible that this was another lecture on the same…

Castalla [Spain]: No Publisher, 1813. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 220mm x 315mm in size. Slightly creased, faint pencil line through top left hand corner of text, couple of tiny chips, undeciphered note in ink to reverse, but generally fairly clean. Desertion during the Peninsula Wars was a serious problem, Linch in his 'Desertion from the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars' finds that "between 1803 and 1815 there were 77,696 cases of desertion", though "desertion from British corps primarily occurred in the British Isles". A rough translation follows. "Notice. Attentive to some soldiers dependent on the army of S.M.B. that I have the honor of commanding in chief, they desert their flags, and may forget their duty to such an extent, that they prefer to go to the host of the common enemy, rather than bolver to meet those of their legitimate Sovereign; Therefore, all Spanish citizens and civilians who love their homeland and national liberty are…

Loughborough: [Alpheus] Buck Single sided printed broadside, approximately 135mm x 310mm in size, n.d. c1815? Occasional spot of foxing, slightly worn to edges, a couple of creases from old folds, but generally fairly bright and clean. The printer was Alpheus Buck, who is not listed in the BBTI. The adulteration of bread was common, even after the 1757 Making of Bread Act, which was introduced after a report accused bakers of using lime, alum, chalk, plaster, and even powdered bones to add weight and keep bread white. Vogler notes that the medical journal 'The Lancet', which campaigned against adulterants, "found that every single loaf the report's author bought at random in London contained alum. The millers and bakers responded by denying that alum was toxic, but Eliza Acton drily pointed out that, 'as their education generally does not qualify them to form an opinion worthy of respect upon the subject, it is unwise of them to make such an assertion'" (Vogler,…

London: J. Pitts Single sided printed broadside, approximately 245mm x 365mm in size, n.d. but c.1820. Slightly chipped and creased to edges, lightly browned, a couple of small spots, but generally quite clean. Double column, with attractive border. Relates the dream of a seaman called James Covey, who, two weeks before the battle of Camperdown with the Dutch fleet, had dreamed that he had both of his legs blown off. During the engagement, he did indeed lose both of his legs. The text is signed John Griffin, who was pastor at the Tabernacle in Orange Street, near Southsea Common, which had opened in 1754, and who was the author of several books and pamphlets. Pitts was at this address in 1820 and 1821. Showing at Hull only in Library Hub, but the R.T.S. seemingly issued the story in a 8pp pamphlet around the same time, so I'm not sure which came first. Unknown. Unbound. Good. Folio. Broadside.

London: Pardon and Son, 1869. Double sided, lithographed ticket for the opening ceremony of Bunhill Fields cemetery, approximately 270mm x 190mm in size. Front with one or two tiny spots of foxing but is generally quite bright and clean, reverse with remnants of glue from once being stuck in an album, with some light discolouring and surface abrasion, but not affecting text. The reverse is a plan of the burial ground, with the location of prominent internees numbered (John Bunyan, Daniel De Foe, Richard Cromwell, Isaac Watts, Thomas Hardy, John Horne Tooke etc). It is the burial ground of Nonconformists. This 'opening ceremony', (it had already been in use for over two hundred years), was to celebrate the development of the site by the City of London. This involved laying out paths, undertaking tree planting and carrying out repair work to the tombs including re-cutting and recording inscriptions. Bury [St. Edmunds]: J. Rackham, 1814. Single sided printed broadside, approximately 195mm x 300mm in size. Suffolk Record Office have a different broadside for the same event, promising other events, including donkey races, male (winner gets a pair of shoes) and female (winner gets a copper kettle) races, and a pig hunt (winner keeps the pig!).
