A very nice copy of an early edition. Daniel Carter Beard was an American illustrator, author, youth leader, Georgist and social reformer who founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. Sidney Edward Paget (1860-1908) was a British illustrator of the Victorian era, best known for his illustrations that accompanied Arthur Conan Doyle 's Sherlock Holmes stories in The Strand magazine.

This book was written in 1858, just after a time when it had become possible to travel to Russia. Many people had availed themselves of this chance, and had written of their journeys. Claude Grahame-White (1879-1959) was an aviation pioneer and the most famous aviator in Britain before the First World War. British journalist Harry Harper (1880-1960) claimed to be the "World's First Air Correspondent." During World War 1 Harper was the Daily Mail's air correspondent, and acted as aeronautical secretary and consultant to Lord Northcliffe, owner of the Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror.

Percy Francis Westerman (1876 - 1959) was a prolific author of children's literature, many of his books are adventures with military themes. His first book for boys, 'A Lad of Grit', was published in 1908. In the same year, Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement, which strongly influenced many of Westerman's books - he was a particularly keen supporter of the Sea Scouts.
