Full contemporary calf, blind lattice, foliar and multi bordered tray tooling to boards, foliar gilt tooling to edges, gilt to spine, leather labels. Marbled endpapers and edges. Text bright and crisp. A little foxing/toning to some plates. Wear and rubbing to extremities, a few nicks and scratches to the boards. A handsome, firmly bound set. Rare: One copy only recorded of this edition in JISC: held by the National Trust. Not in the British Library. Not listed in WorldCat.

Decorative and elaborate original blind tooling and speckle to upper and lower boards. Spine in six compartments with raised bands, blind rules, leather label, gilt lettering. Vestiges of floral gilt tooling to edges. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Edges sprinkled red. Endpapers toned. Light marginal water stain to lower gutter of title page. Wright Bookplate to fep. A pleasure to hold and to read.
Sir William Temple, 1st Baronet (1628-1699) Restoration diplomat, statesman and essayist. Jonathan Swift was his secretary from 1689; the original manuscript of this work was in Swift's hand. Swift began a sequel, but later abandoned it. Samuel Johnson stated Temple was "the first writer who gave cadence to English prose" and modelled his own style upon it. One of the earliest scholarly studies of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman culture.

Stapleton, Thomas (1806 – 1849), antiquary, FRS, was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries on 15 January 1839. His most important literary work was this edition of the rolls of the Norman exchequer, printed by the Society of Antiquaries as Magni rotuli scaccarii Normanniae sub regibus Angliae (2 vols., 1840 – 4), which 150 years later remains the authoritative edition of these important twelfth-century records. Red spine label with gilt lettering and edge rules. Blue endpapers. Title page slightly toned. Lacking half-title. Rubbing to spine edges. A crisp copy of the rarer London first edition.
In making a Papier Croisé, the final step required that the paper be lifted up and carefully moved while still wet. This caused the characteristic knotting in the design.

The British Frontier Headquarters at Peshawar at the eastern end of the historic Khyber Pass, close to the border with Afghanistan, midway between Kabul and Islamabad. The Peshawar District Command covered Chitral, Landi Kotal, Char Bagh, Shagai, Ali Masjid, Nowshera, Bara Fort, Jhansi Post, Fort Milward, Fort Salop, Malakand, Dargai, Chakdara, Shabkadr-Aberzai, Cherat, Risalpur, Mardan.
