Good/no dustwrapper. 8vo. b&w frontispiece illustration Scarce early Australian edition of Victor Hugo's novel set in England during the reigns of James II and Queen Anne, first published in 1869 as ""L'Homme Qui Rit"", and variously appearing in English editions as 'The Man Who Laughs', 'By Order of the King' (after it's French subtitle), or as here 'By The King's Command'; published by Ellis & Lake (of Melbourne and Sydney), no further publishing details - preface dated 1869, but this certainly just retains the date from Hugo's original; there is a Ward Lock & Co. catalogue to rear of text (which suggests a connection with Ellis & Lake), wherein the Melbourne office of WL & Co is referenced, and since they did not open offices in Melbourne until 1884, it could not have been published before that date; in any case a late 19th-C Australian edition; Ellis & Lake publications are very scarce, as is any information in their regard; red cloth boards… Leer más

Good. 8vo. b&w illustrations Very Scarce piece of 'Dismissal' memorabilia, being an illustrated satire of the lead-up to the December 13 1975 Australian federal election, significant as following the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor Government, after which Malcolm Fraser was installed as caretaker PM; Fraser would eventually win the biggest majority government in Australian history; 20 pages of (patently left-leaning) political caricatures accompanied by satirical text, featuring all the protagonists, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Khemlani, Kerr, Joh, etc; produced by David Hinchliffe and Cheryl McGregor - Hinchliffe (who was 19 at the time of publication) would go on to serve as Deputy Mayor of Brisbane, and leader of the Australian Labor Party Caucus, he quit politics in 2011 to pursue his vocation as a visual artist; McGregor went on to a career in journalism; med-heavy tanning to reverse sides of covers, and title page, lighter toning/foxing… Leer más

New Edition (c1830's) of the Clavis Homerica, being a lexicon of all the words which appear in the Iliad, with English translations/interpretations; long considered an indispensable Homeric text, this new edition by John Walker seeks to address deficiencies and errors of earlier editions; please note: no title page or prelims are present with this volume (apart from the preface/advertisement); the former owner has written in pencil 'John Walker c1830' and 'Whittaker Treacher London', ie the publisher - Walker's name, publishing date, and publisher are all consistent; full calf with red title label and gilt titling to spine; leather generally worn and rubbed, prelims and title page removed, text block rubbed and foxed, scattered foxing throughout, o.w.
