Worn, with significant splitting along the front gutter hinge and a couple of minor cover spots. This is a reading copy only -- a young (probably pre-literate) critic has executed pencil scribblings on the frontispiece, title page, dedication leaf, the blank verso (only) of the first plate, and both rear endpapers, most of which have been erased, but not eradicated. There is also some red, or bistre crayon on the (blank) verso of the folding plan of the Battle of Ombdurman. Alas, the vigorous marks to the back of this plate continue across much of the text of page 275. Princess Marie-Louise Thérèse of Savoy-Carignan (8 September 1749 – 3 September 1792) was a member of a cadet branch of the House of Savoy. She was married at the age of 17 to Louis Alexandre de Bourbon-Penthièvre, Prince de Lamballe, the heir to the greatest fortune in France. After her marriage, which lasted a year, she went to court and became the confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette. She was killed in the massacres of September 1792 during the French Revolution. .
