William Augustus Brevoort Coolidge was an American theologian and climber who lived much of his life in Europe, making many first ascents in the Alps in the 1860s-1880s. According to Neate (C58) he had "tremendous knowledge of the history of mountaineering, but was extremely quarrelsome.

Text in English and Japanese. Yichiro Miura became the first person to ski on Mount Everest on May 6, 1970. He descended nearly 4,200 vertical feet from the South Col (elevation over 26,000 ft). This book documents the full expedition that made his accomplishment possible, including brief mention and a few images relating to the six Sherpas who lost their lives in an ice-fall avalanche. Account of the 1933 British expedition to Everest, led by Ruttledge, which reached about 28,120 feet, but failed to make the summit.

As new, in a clean dust jacket with minimal wear. An important work by the distinguished mountaineering bibliographer, containing detailed summaries of the location, access, routes, and climbing history of each of the 400 known peaks between 7000 and 8000 meters.

Lightbody and Stuart Vines, folding panorama, 2 folding maps. Bound in original red cloth with gilt lettering, image of a condor on upper board. Upper corners bumped (visible on text block), spine just slightly faded, text clean, binding sound. FitzGerald (1871-1931) was a wealthy American-born mountaineer best known for organizing the expedition described here. Having previously climbed in the Alps and New Zealand, he set his sights on South America in 1896. "He took a geologist, surveyor, engineer, and naturalist to make scientific surveys, and six alpine guides led by Mattias Zurbriggen. FitzGerald made several unsuccessful attempts before Zurbriggen went on alone to make the first ascent of Aconcagua (22,835 feet), the highest peak in the Americas" (DNB). Neate F37.

Inscribed on the last page "Your mountain is a high one--but you are a brave and courageous person--you can climb the mountains and none are too high for you. Stan." The author was an enthusiastic and accomplished amateur climber who credited climbing with his recovery from serious illness.

A very good copy with mild sunning to the spine, some foxing on the edges of the text block. In the very scarce dust jacket, which has internal tape reinforcements and chips missing from the head and foot of the spine and one corner of the front panel. Account of the unsuccessful 1930 International Himalaya Expedition led by Gunter Dyrenfurth, which was plagued by bad weather, an avalanche, and other mishaps. Smythe describes the extensive preparations for the expedition, the Himalayan scenery, travels in the region--including a visit to the Pemayangste Monastery, and the party's successful ascent of Jonsong (24,344 feet).
