Descripción:
Boston: Little Brown, (1972). First edition. One of the dedication copies. From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED on dedication page below the printed names, "Could this be for your distinguished service in Maidstone dear old editor darling? / Love / Norman." A collection of essays, excerpts, etc., written from 1967 to 1972. First book appearance for many. In addition to Adeline, the book is dedicated to his sister Barbara, daughter Susan, and to "Al." Small tear at head of spine, still about very good in slightly soiled white dust jacket with several tears. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was the editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer submitted it… Leer más

Descripción:
Evanston: W. M. Carpenter, 1929. First edition. One of 100 copies for private circulation. [Richards B83]. First book appearance of "Speech on Behalf of the Old Boys" and first appearances of several letters. A history of Kipling's prepatory school by Chicago manufacturer William Montelle Carpenter, whose Kipling collection is now in the Library of Congress. Illustrated with photographs. 8vo vellum backed blue paper boards lettered in gilt on front and spine. Original glassine present though significantly chipped. Lacking the slipcase. Carpenter's bookplate (with Kipling quote) on front pastedown with inscription above reading, "For Herbert M. Carpenter {erasure] Evanston, Ill. June 14 [corrected from 24], 1951." It appears "Herbert" has been corrected also. (Brothers!) Typed errata slip tipped to free endpaper differs from another we have examined. It lists only 2 items (vs. 3) and the wording in the second correction differs slightly. Offset from bookplate on endpaper otherwise fine. A unique copy… Leer más

New York: Harbinger House, (1942). First edition. Poetry collection from the "King of Greenwich Village Bohemians" who descended into dereliction after making a name for himself in the 1920s and '30s (Wikipedia). ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED, "To [William] Saroyan/ A poet to another poet/ --- is there/ any difference?/ Maxwell Bodenheim." In August 1942, Saroyan hired a down-on-his-luck Bodenheim to play himself in his one-act play, "Across the Board on Tomorrow Morning," at the Belasco Theater in New York. Bodenheim's task was to interrupt the show and recite his own poetry. "Bill's promotion of street characters to stage roles took a disturbing turn with the entrance of [Bodenheim]. For decades the quintessential Greenwich Village Bohemian, but now a ravaging piece of human wreckage, [on opening night his] ad-libbed poetry only made the audience more fidgety, and those who tried to escape ... were greeted by a wall of rain." Hiler, a fellow expatriate in Paris in the 1920s, tutored Miller in art, and he and Miller (together with William Saroyan) later authored a 1945 book on the subject called WHY ABSTRACT? Page gatherings apparently over-glued at spine and roughly opening (by Miller for the inscription?) causing the cover to fall from the text block, taking a few tiny pieces of the first leaf with it; and Hiler has perhaps read his copy at bath as it's a little rumpled and shows light damp staining to first several leaves. Otherwise about very good and a wonderful association regardless of condition issues.
