Buenos Ayres (Buenos Aires, Argentina): Imprenta del Estado, 1827. First Edition. Good. One of several heated political jeremiads issued by competing factions in Buenos Aires after the collapse of the administration of Argentina's first president, Bernardino Rivadavia, in June 1827. On September 14, Manuel Dorrego, the governor of Buenos Aires published a message on his politics and policies. The message generated a critical response in the La Crónica newspaper, followed by this rejoinder critical of Rivadavia and in support of Dorrego. 199 pages. According the the Argentinean bookseller Carlos Casavalle, "This is one of the pieces that must be consulted to form an impartial judgment about the character of the struggle that the spirited politicians were fighting at that remarkable time in Argentine history." México [Mexico City]: México Militar, 1902. First Edition. Two bound volumes of the first two years of this scarce Mexican military periodical. According to the masthead, the magazine was published with the approval (aprobación) of the Mexican Secretary of the Army and Navy. According to the introduction, the goal of Mexico Militar was to promote the modernization of the Mexican military (with most focus on the army). The publication reported on the activities of the army, offered studies of battles in Mexico and Europe, profiled officers (many of whom are pictured), translated works from foreign sources, and even offered the occasional poem. The magazine is extensively illustrated, especially in the first year, with halftone photographs, as well as engravings, and the odd map. The American representative of the Comisión Reguladora del Mercado de Henequen [Regulatory Commission of the Sisal Fiber Market] narrates his actions in the US, from 1915 to 1917. The Mexican Revolution broke the US monopoly on sisal fiber cultivation in Yucatán, Mexico, and that led to great wealth in the Mexican state as fiber prices soared during the First World War. The increase in prices led to great concern in the United States, with extensive hearings in Congress. An uncommon Spanish-language imprint, with six holdings in OCLC, three in the US and three in Mexico. 56 pages. First edition (first printing). Good only, in stained and creased wrappers.

Monterroso (a Honduras native but a Guatemalan citizen who lived in exile in Mexico) is known for his humorous stories. This collection presages his literary career with its comic title, which translates as "Complete works (and other stories)". Obras completas calls to mind modern ironic titles published decades later like Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and Jincy Willett's Winner of the National Book Award. 135 pages. Perhaps greatest Latin American novel of the 20th century--the sort of book where most Spanish speaking booklovers can quote the opening line, "Muchos años después, frente al pelotón de fusilamiento, el coronel Aureliano Buendía había de recordar aquella tarde remota en que su padre lo llevó a conocer el hielo." [Translated here by Gregory Rabassa as "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember than distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."] In addition to being a great book, this book is a collector's favorite because of the two states of the dust jacket. In some copies, the first sentence of the jacket flap ends with "one of the most important novels ever written in Latin America!"
