A rare edition. All I have found online are editions from the early 20th century. This would be a great sourcebook for quiz nights. I was a teacher for 40 years, but some of these questions stump me.
No dust jacket. The tan fabric covered boards show just mild wear at the edges and corners, and there is one small dark stain on the right hand edge of the front cover. The real wear problem is that the endpapers have split, both front and rear. Photo #3 shows the front split, the rear is worse. New endpapers might well be in order, if you feel up to that.
First published in 1880.

No dust jacket. Very little wear. Brown fabric covered boards with navy blue and green text and decoration stamped on the front cover and the spine. Fabric is still intact over the corners and there is just the slightest crimping at the head and tail of the spine. Darkened in a few places on the exterior hinges. The pages are clean, tight and unmarked. This is the fifth book in the Mental Efficiency Series. A rare book.

A pocket-sized book, part of a larger series by Collins' Clear-Type Press (Collins Illustrated Pocket Classics). Illustrated. The Compleat Angler was originally published in 1653 and underwent a number of revisions over the centuries. Presented as a discussion of the virtues of fishing between the fisher Piscator, the hunter Venator and the falconer Auceps. What was once 12 chapters has grown to 32 chapters over two parts. Cover of oxblood leather with gilt on the spine. The spine has some damage at the extremities. The leather is also well worn at the corners. The pages are clean, tight and unmarked. The bookseller's sticker on the rear endpaper tells us it was originally sold at the Skylark Bookstore in Washington, D. C. No date is given within the book, but my research indicated that this was published in the 1920s.

Although it says in the title that the series is twelve volumes, there is also an index, giving a total of thirteen volumes. The covers are deep red fabric covered boards with leather over the spine. The wear is almost all in that leather area where there has been damage at the top, and/or bottom of some of the spines (some can be seen in the photos). Otherwise, there is little damage. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked, with no yellowing. The top edges of the pages are gilted as are the print and decorations on the spines. Each book has a color frontspiece and other scattered illustrations as well. The original owner inserted various clippings and pictures into the books, which I have chosen to leave for their historical value. A few of them are shown in the final four photos. The covers are paper and leather with lots of wear. Leather over spine shows some wear but remains intact, while the leather over the corners is worn through in three of four. Decorative endpapers. Page ends are decorated but darkened to be almost indistinguishable. Many illustrations in the form of etchings of actors in their Shakespearian roles. Pages are heavily spotted, are unmarked and seem to be tight and intact. This is the first of three volumes in a set and covers Shakespeare's comedies. Also contains a brief biography of the playwright, written by Charles Knight. THis sturdy book will ship at over four pounds. Excess shipping costs are included in the list price.

This is a six-volume set of the complete works of James Whitcomb Riley, presented in the order that Riley composed the poems. The books show some wear at the corners and the head and tail of the spine. All have gilt on the top page edges. Volume three has a slice in the fabric over the spine and Volume two has a 1.5 cm split on the top edge. Each volume has a frontispiece (photo #7 shows the one from volume six). Hinge splits (like the one shown in photo #6) have occurred in the front of volumes 1-3 and in the rear of volume 4. Small amount of water stain along the top edge is evident in volumes 5 and 6 (see photo #8). All pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Gift inscription, dated 1914, on the front endpapers of volumes 1 and 2. This set will ship at over 9 pounds, so it is not available for international shipping. This short book shows a lot of its 148 years of wear. Paper covered boards have significant wear at the corners and edges. Fabric over the spine, part of which is tearing away at the base (see photos). Hinge splits in the endpapers, front and rear. Foxing on most pages, which remain tight and unmarked. Contains many black and white illustrations and color maps. In the rear is a 12-page addendum, Geography of the Pacific States and the Adjacent Territories. (When this book was published, Washington and Idaho were not yet states.) A very rare book.

Green cloth cover, no dust jacket. Pages clean, tight and unmarked. Contains introduction, the play, notes and five appendices. Recently, an estate sale yielded a number of books originally owned by a woman in England during the first two decades of the 20th century. All are marked with the name of Gertrude (or G.) Pritchard. I have included all of these books in the Pritchard Library catalogue. I will be adding more to this catalogue entry as I find them. For 113 years old, this book is in great condition.

Book shows little wear, other than a binding split after the title page (not an unusual occurence in books of this age). No corresponding split in the rear. Light blue textured covers with dark blue stamped print on the front and spine. Decorative endpapers with the owner's name on the front endpaper. The dust jacket shows wear at the corners and edges and a scattering of tears of 1 cm or less. Color frontispiece. The only date in the book is the original copyright. Grosset and Dunlap are not known for publishing first editions and did not like giving the actual date of publication. This volume is probably from the 1940s or 50s. This is one of a number of Stratton-Porter books I have recently acquired. All will soon be listed online. This one is fairly rare.

Compact volume with deep red cloth cover. Some wear, especially at the ends of the spine. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Original owner's name inside front cover. No publishing date listed, internet research suggests this volume is from the early 1920s. Originally published in 1840.

For a book that is 100 years old, the cover is remarkable. The colors and illustration are strikingly bright. No real sign of wear other than a bit of fading over the spine. This book is in German, in rather ornate print. Pages are clean and tight, with a split over the spine after the title page (nothing loose, fabric showing). An exceedingly rare book. I have managed to find only one other copy on the market, in Switzerland. Due to the weight of this book, it is not available for international shipping without substantial extra charges. Blue fabric covered boards with white print on the front and spine. Wear along the edges and at the corners consistent with the book's age. Front and rear endpapers show splits, but not as to significantly weaken the binding. The pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Contains 366 charts and diagrams in black and white, some with red highlights. The main body of the book runs 717 pages, followed by a 43 page Supplement on the Ford, a 16 page Supplement on the King 8 Model D, a 32 page Supplement on the Packard Twin Six, and a 23 page Index. Rather rare and over 100 years old. Not much use for a computerized, fuel-injected vehicle, but for the restorer of antique vehicles from 1916 or before, this could be an invaluable resource, not to mention a nice collector's piece. Book shows its age. Leather at the corners and over the spine is significantly worn, with boards showing through at the corners and pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine. The pages are clean, tight and unmarked, with gilt top edges. A few small marks on the endpapers.

No dust jacket. Light green fabric with a decorated front cover and white print on the spine (mostly worn off). Mild edgewear at the corners and the spine. A glue break at the title page (photo #3) and a long tear at page 23 (photo #5). Otherwise, the stitching is still intact, albeit a little stretched, and the pages appear clean and unmarked. A quite rare book, in its earliest forms. It appears that the first was published by Bobbs-Merrill Company, followed by this A. L. Burt edition, with the same cover art. While there are plenty of reprints, facsimilies and PODs, the early forms are scarce.

A two-violume set, with ten essays in each volume. Cover has marbled paper and leather at the corners and the spine. Most of the wear is to the leather, which is now well over 100 years old. Pictured is a split in the leather along the spine hinge at the top rear of Volume I. A similar split has formed along the lower front hinge of Volume II. The pages appear to be clean, tight and unmarked. The cover and the decorative endpapers (see photos) indicate that this was likely as deluxe reprint, with no date, probably from the early 20th century. This set will ship at over two pounds. The padded leather cover is encased in a homemade plastic bookcover, probably to preserve the leather, which is deteriorating, especially over the spine and at some corners. Gilt print on the front and spine. Gift inscription inside the front cover (1884, to Ida from Arthur). Pages are gilt-edged all around. They are also clean, tight and unmarked. Chock full of quotations from the mid-19th century and before.

First edition, 1894 on the title page. No dust jacket. Some wear at the corners and edges of the spine. Dark green fabric, not worn through at any point, with gilt printing on the spine. Black endpapers are cracking over the spine joint. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Owner's name on first page after the front endpaper. That page and the next embossed with "Botanical Museum, Harvard University". New Riverside Edition. In excellent condition for its age. Also very rare.

Wear as befits this book's age. Green fabric cover, with the fabric splitting along the rear edge of the spine. Pages are tight and intact, with scattered notes. Owner's name inside the front cover and copious note on the rear endpapers. Spine is a little weak where the front endpaper is tearing.

Embossed red cloth cover. Not a lot of wear for its age. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Four fold-out maps are intact, still bright (see two examples in photos #4 and 5). The original owner's name is inside the front cover. That owner, Gertrude Pritchard, appears to have been a schoolteacher in England in the early 20th century. I recently acquired a number of her books from an estate sale in Seattle. I have gathered those books into my "Pritchard Library" catalogue.
