The dedication was to his newfound friend, a small, injured sparrow named Scraggles. Scruggles died just as the last pages were written. James had at one time, or another visited all the missions in California James states that much of his work had been taken from Bancroft's work by selecting, rearranging, and bringing it together for convenient use. A fine copy save for a little off-setting to front end sheets from an old clipping once laid in. Bound in green pictorial gilt cloth depicting a mission, spine lettering gilt. An exceptionally nice copy.

James Beckwourth (Beckwith) was born into slavery in 1798 (or 1800) in Frederick County, Virginia. He was in his early 20's when he joined General William Ashley's Rocky Mountain Fur Company. He became one of the most well-known of the trappers and mountain men. He lived among the Crow Indians, returned to fight for the U.S. Army in the Second Seminole War in Florida. In 1843 he left for California where he discovered the Beckwourth Pass (a low elevation passes through the Sierra Nevada Mountain chain. In the old West, his amazing resourcefulness was respected among the Westerners and his African American origins did not hinder his advancement. In his introduction.....The memorial was printed in Mexico in 1943, in 100 copies, from the original in the library of the University of Texas. The original manuscript was acquired by the University from the late W.B. Stephens. The editor, Vargas Rea, wondered how it came to be in Texas when it should have been in the archives of the Mexican Congress......A near fine copy bound in 1/4 green cloth over decorative green and yellow paper covered boards, paper spine label lettered in red, in a very nice, clean dust jacket with white residue to upper and lower edge from tape or sticker. the boards are bowed, attractive, small bookplate of Tyrus G. San Francisco: Pacific Art Company, 1903. Large Octavo. 634p. Portraits and biographies of each of the major businessmen of the Pacific West Coast. Of course, it has all sorts of professional men such as doctors and lawyers or furniture salesman but there is also a photograph of Jack London who had just published "The Son of the Wolf", Ambrose Bierce; Hubert Howe Bancroft, Charles Lummis, Joaquin Miller, and on one page the Big Four (Stanford, Huntington, Hopkins and Crocker), the McClatchys of Sacramento, Bound in full dark brown leather lettered and decorated in gilt, spine lettring gilt, spine has changed to lighter shade of brown, top edge gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a very nice clean copy.

Oakland: Post-Enquirer Publishing Company, 1931. Octavo. 174 pages. Davie was mayor of Oakland from 1895-1897 and from 1915-1931, the longest-serving mayor. During his life, he was a canal boy, law student, butcher, buckaroo, rancher, inventor, actor, opera singer, bouncer, miner, lawyer, crusader, merchant, bookseller, organizer, ship owner and politician. Not only is this copy inscribed to Dr. Porter, but includes his proposal for the Davie Recreation Stadium. What he envisioned on the land he was donating to the City of Oakland was "a mammoth stadium....the largest in the world with a seating capacity of 100,000 people". This mimeographed paper was what Davie had gathered from the daily newspapers back in 1921. His donation which was made in 1931 was extraordinary though today only a lovely park and a Tennis Stadium has been implemented. He writes about the farm lands, Hawaiians, wine country, the rivers, lakes, Indians, and more found on his journey. A travel guide of places to visit and things to see. A very good copy bound in brown cloth lettered and decorated in black and gilt, brown coated endpapers, wear to corners and spine ends.

First edition of this work was published in 1850 and is a fascinating account of the Gold Rush when it first hit California.A very good copy bound in light blue cloth decorated in gilt, spine plain.

The missions of California were the first outposts of Spanish colonial settlement, beginning with the founding of Mission San Diego in 1769. The interest in the ancient and dilapidated buildings and their history increases with each year. The author was a prolific chronicler of California Missions. Writing almost a century ago, James made several prescient observations about the mission landscapes. Just as he predicted, the missions have been {perennially new" because each generation has shaped the spaces and inscribed on them their notions of the past. He recognized the importance of the sites for informing the public's notion of the past. A fine copy bound in maroon cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt. no bumps or foxing. Previous owner's Christmas gift inscription in ink. A lovely copy.

An unusually bright copy in very good condition with the lower front corner bumped with the original red dust jacket [not price-clipped] in very good condition with only a very light edgewear and a tiny chip in lower right front panel. 6-Guns 189; Graff 250; Cowan, p. 16. One of the important accounts of early California. Major Bell joined Walker on his Filibustering Expedition. He was also one of the band that captured Joaquin Murietta. This issue corrects some of the confused readings of the first edition in 1881.

A beautiful copy bound in blue linen pictorially stamped with two birds on a branch in gilt, lettering gilt, previous owner's name, only very minute rubbing to corners and spine ends, near fine in a very good dust jacket with some toning and chipping to edges.

San Francisco: A. M. Robertson, 1914. 446 pages. 36 leaves of plates. When Alexander Smith Taylor's article, "the Indianology of California" appeared in a 1860 edition of the California Farmer, it became the basis for work by Bancroft, Powers and Kroeber. This work was a supplement of the work and still delights the reader. The back of the work helps with the early Spanish pronunication and has references to the longer rticles.

Tucson; (2008): The University of Arizona Press. First Edition. Octavo. . First printing.199pp. From 1993 to 2000 the author interviewed and observed Latino youth between the ages of seventeen and twenty-four who lived in a barrio in a city on the California coast. He conducted forty life interviews, selecting six people to investigate in depth. Twenty of the participants worked at a fast-food restaurant, while the other twenty worked at a community cultural cent. This is one of the most extensive studies of barrio youth available, It concludes with a discussion of social justice education for Latino youth and how this educational approach meets their academic needs while providing opportunities for self-determination and community activism. The reader shares William Swain's day-by-dat experinces hunting buffalo, camping in a wilderness alive with the sounds of hundreds of men, suviving a violent hailstom and blizzard, and more. Bound in1/4 brown cloth ovr tan paper covered baords, spine lettered and rule in gilt. A very good copy in very good pictorial dust jacket.

Berkeley; (1976): University of California Press. First Edition. Octavo. 488pp., with a foreword by Theodora Kroeber and a biographical introduction by Timothy H.H. Thoresen, Folkloristic Commentary by Alan Dundes and Editor's preface by Grace Buzalkijko. Between 1901 and 1907 the author, then a young professor at the university of Berkely, made numerous trips into the country of the Yurok Indians, along the far northern California coast and inland on the lower Klamath River. Kroeber, concentrated on the culture of Yurok, sought material artifacts for the University Museum and collected Yurok myths, tales of woge times. He collected over 150 myths and variants, transcribing some in the original tongue, many on phonographic cylinders for later translation. He had dies near the end of his work. To mark Kroeber's birth, the complete collection is published here for the first time following Kroeber's plan.
