In contemporary stiff vellum, leather label titled in gilt flaking away. Vellum frayed at crown. Front hinge splitting. Old stamp, illegible, on title page. Shelf label mounted to front pastedown. Yet a clean, sound copy, relatively free of foxing or blemishes (except toning of final few leaves). In half vellum over 17th- or 18th-century woodblock printed paste paper, titled in manuscript on spine. Lower board ruptured near corner, subsequently rebuilt. Some leaves toned brown. Early ownership inscriptions and later bibliographical notes on front free endpaper and on rear pastedown. References: Adams F-182; Olschki, Choix de livres anciens, VI, 5817 This essay extolling marriage is an early artifact of modern ethnography, in that it poses as a survey of marriage customs through history and around the world. In true humanist fashion, Fausto mines the ancient historians for most of his material. Bound in recent vellum in period style, yapp edges, titled in ink on spine. Early 20th-century bibliographical note bound in. Marginal annotations in contemporary hand. Leaf a ii, the dedicatory letter, present in two states, the cancel addressed to Johann Jakob Fugger closing with Lando's name, and the original leaf addressed to Christoph Mielich and not signed, as usual. Shoulder notes. In limp vellum, titled in manuscript on spine; lace strips exposed; spine lining old manuscript on vellum, exposed. Small holes in first and last blanks, and inner margin of preliminary leaves. Some dampstaining on last 6 leaves, otherwise a beautiful, large, wide-margined, clean copy . The whole protected in custom built sturdy clamshell case with faux roundback spine covered in brown calf and titled in gilt. Armorial bookplate of John Aitken, with motto "in cruces salus." References: Durling 2565; Camerini 522; Adams J37. The definitive Giunta edition of the best-known work by Hippocrates (460-370 BCE). In contemporary full brown plain leather boards, spine with five raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, with title stamped in gilt directly on spine ("Verulami de Augm. Sc."). Ownership inscriptions on title page (dated 1724). Text unmarred. References: Gibson, "Bacon," 130. Second printing after the London edition the previous year, and the first European printing of Bacon's "De augmentis scientiarum." Effectively a greatly expanded version in Latin of his "Advancement of Learning" (1605), this is the book that, in its Paris printing, spread the word of the scientific method across Europe, influencing Descartes and the philosophers of the Enlightenment, Locke, Leibniz, Huygens and Voltaire.

Quarto (22 cm); Systema cosmicum: [16], 495, [24] pages, including engraved title page, portrait and illustrations, Augustae Treboc[corum] [i.e., Strasbourg] : impensis Elzeviriorum, typis Davidis Hautti, 1635; Nov-antiqua: [8], 60 [4] pages, text printed in Latin and Italian in parallel columns, Augustae Treboc [corum], impensis Elzevirorum, typis Davidis Huatti, 1636; Tractatus: [8], 104 pages [lacks plate], Argentorati, typis Davidis Hautti, 1635. In early19th-century scarlet-dyed sheep uniquely embossed across the grain with rows of a toothed pattern, with gilt scroll border composed of interlocking fleurons and spine decorated and titled direct in gilt. First edition in a modern language of the novelistic biography of Apollonius of Tyana by the Hellenistic writer Philostratus of Lemnos (d. 230). Aldus had published a Latin translation at the beginning of the century, but popular clamor grew as Apollonius came to be seen as a sort of Jesus, or a parallel Jesus, or an alternative Jesus, or perhaps the real Jesus. Text in Greek with interlinear Latin translation and commentary. Text and commentary within ruled borders. Elaborately gilt-tooled morocco armorial binding of l'abbé Genesse (i.e., of Genoa), with arms within a central lozenge enclosed in a motto and filigreed in all corners and within ruled borders on both boards; spine with filigreed central panel. Edges gilt. Pages generally toned with scattered foxing; light water stain on covers and in first 100 leaves. Binding reference: Tausin, "Dictionnaire des devises ecclésiastiques", 165. Venice: Niccolo Pezzana, 1658. Very Good. Quarto (23 cm); [50] (of 52?), 788, [8] 152 pages. Lacks half-title. Four title pages, each with Pezzana's woodcut device showing Jove, Juno, Vulcan and Neptune. Occasional woodcut initials and ornaments. Shoulder notes. Bound in marbled paper with leather backstrip; backstrip decorated and titled in gilt. Binding quite worn, with joints tender and boards scuffed, edges exposed. Text generally quite good with occasional worm trails, the most severe of them in the margins. Pages evenly toned. References: Michel, V, 161. First Pezzana edition of the popular 16th-century "forest of many stories" by Spain's Pedro Mexia. (Nicolò Pezzana purchased the famous Giunti press in 1657, making this one of the first titles issued under his name.) Rome: Gaetano Zenobi, 1703. First edition. Octavo (23 cm); 114, [2] pages. Vignette with arms of Pope Clement XI flanked by putti on title page. LACKS FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT. Decorated letters and ornaments in text. Bound in mottled calf, weak at joints and worn at extremities. Early inscription abraded at base of title page. Pages lightly toned, with occasional stains. References: Cicognara 2404; Anthony Blunt, "Don Vincenzo Vittoria" in The Burlington Magazine, 109:766 (1967) 31-32. The author was a Spanish engraver and printer who lived and worked in Rome for part of his life. The text is a defense of Raphael and others from some dismissive remarks made by Carlo Cesare Malvasia in his promotion of the Carracci and of the Bolognese school, "La Felsina Pittrice" (1678). Vittoria wrote the material, probably in Spanish, while still living in Valencia. (In the preface, he apologizes for his Italian which "lacks purity.")
