Florence: Bartolommeo Sermartelli, 1584. Very Good. Quarto (22 cm); [16], 390, [18] pages. Title page with the crest of Cardinal Alessandro dei Medici, archbishop of Florence, with cardinal headgear and drapery printed in red. Woodcut initials and ornaments. In contemporary stiff vellum, leather label titled in gilt flaking away. Vellum frayed at crown. Front hinge splitting. Old stamp, illegible, on title page. Shelf label mounted to front pastedown. Yet a clean, sound copy, relatively free of foxing or blemishes (except toning of final few leaves). References: Haym, I, 105, #7; Gamba 1532 (quoting Poggiali: "Da alcuni vien preferita questa seconda impressione alla prima; a noi sembra opportuno l'averle ambedue...."); Fontanini II, 238. A version of Nardi's text came out in Lyon in 1582. The first Florentine edition, offered here, differs from the Lyonnaise printing in several respects: dropping a "discourse on the city of Lyon" and a "catalogue of the gonfalonieri" (that is, effectively, mayors… Leer más

Descripción:
Venice: Plinio Pietrasanta, 1554. First edition. Very Good. Quarto (22 cm); 45, [3] pages (last leaf blank). Title within woodcut architectural border. Historiated woodcut initials throughout. In half vellum over 17th- or 18th-century woodblock printed paste paper, titled in manuscript on spine. Lower board ruptured near corner, subsequently rebuilt. Some leaves toned brown. Early ownership inscriptions and later bibliographical notes on front free endpaper and on rear pastedown. References: Adams F-182; Olschki, Choix de livres anciens, VI, 5817 This essay extolling marriage is an early artifact of modern ethnography, in that it poses as a survey of marriage customs through history and around the world. In true humanist fashion, Fausto mines the ancient historians for most of his material. So we find out that in Lacedaemonia (or, Atlantis), men who refused to marry were forced to run naked through the forum in the dead of winter, and that in Assyria, husbands were bound by law to obey… Leer más

Florence: Lorenzo Torrentino, 1549. Good. Octavo ( 17 cm); 723, [21] pages, last blank. Woodcut initials. In contemporary (or 17th century) vellum-covered boards, with leather label titled in gilt. Titled in manuscript on bottom edge. Pages not bright, with some light staining throughout. 19th-century armorial bookplate in chromolithograph. Vellum doesn't want to close in dry weather. References: Schweiger, Greek, 232; BM Italian 512, Adams P-1071. Gamba 1394 ("Bella edizione"). See also Bongi, 252. First edition in a modern language of the novelistic biography of Apollonius of Tyana by the Hellenistic writer Philostratus of Lemnos (d. 230). Aldus had published a Latin translation at the beginning of the century, but popular clamor grew as Apollonius came to be seen as a sort of Jesus, or a parallel Jesus, or an alternative Jesus, or perhaps the real Jesus. No less than three major publishing houses rushed to get an Italian version of Philostratus out to the public. Torrentino's issue,… Leer más

Rome: Gaetano Zenobi, 1703. First edition. Octavo (23 cm); 114, [2] pages. Vignette with arms of Pope Clement XI flanked by putti on title page. LACKS FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT. Decorated letters and ornaments in text. Bound in mottled calf, weak at joints and worn at extremities. Early inscription abraded at base of title page. Pages lightly toned, with occasional stains. References: Cicognara 2404; Anthony Blunt, "Don Vincenzo Vittoria" in The Burlington Magazine, 109:766 (1967) 31-32. The author was a Spanish engraver and printer who lived and worked in Rome for part of his life. The text is a defense of Raphael and others from some dismissive remarks made by Carlo Cesare Malvasia in his promotion of the Carracci and of the Bolognese school, "La Felsina Pittrice" (1678). Vittoria wrote the material, probably in Spanish, while still living in Valencia. (In the preface, he apologizes for his Italian which "lacks purity.")
