Illustrated with seven copper engravings, originally executed by Andrew Bell, which accompanied the essay, here likewise reprinted, published in the 1797 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The former have been printed on handmade Moriki paper, the latter on Rives and Ingres. The result is a publication suitably honorific to its source material, one aesthetically fit to the task and engineered with a mathematical eye apt for both book and building construction. Bound in decorative papers over boards with three exposed brown leather bands, and embossed copper "illustration" inset to upper cover. Trace edgewear, else near fine.

Santa Barbara, CA: Simplemente Maria Press, 2024. Heebner, Mary. Three quarto vols. Each one of fifteen copies, and each signed by Mary Heebner at the colophon. A trio of Heebner's concerned meditations on the perilous status of the arctic landscape, based on two ship voyages undertaken in 2017 and 2023. In two volumes under the single title of Vanishing Tracks, Heebner mourns the current ephemerality of the polar bear. In Arctic Light, she narrates her experiences as visitor to and observer of the terrain, while impressing upon the reader how beautiful it all is, "more so knowing that it is leaving us." In Frazil: New Ice Forming, in terms both metaphorical and directly scientific she considers the regenerative cycle of water and ice and that cycle's frightening fragility. Loughcrew, Oldcastle, Co. Meath, Ireland: Gallery Press, 1996. Fallon, Conor. Oblong octavo. 46pp. One of 260 copies. Signed by the author and by the artist, Conor Fallon, whose sculptures of cast steel and bronze emblematize Irish plastic and public arts of the late 20th century, earning him induction into the Royal Hibernian Academy. Fallon has hand-colored some of his illustrations, which along with Banville's text playfully relate the tale of Noah and his divinely ordained boat. Produced by the Gallery Press for The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children, located in Temple Bar, Dublin. Bound in quarter blue cloth with lightly marbled paper over boards and gilt bird motif to upper cover. Housed in slipcase. Fine.

Illustrated with ten wood engravings by Shinsuke Minegishi that explore the alternative possibilities presented by the form of various bits of human anatomy. The engravings of a beetle earring on an ear, two feet holding an apple, and an eyeball in a dreamscape, among others, are detailed flights of anatomical fancy. With an introduction by the artist. A fine production from Rollin Milroy's Heavenly Monkey. A fine copy in boards featuring a color lithograph by Minegishi. Housed in a stiff paper sleeve. (3 by 2 3/4 in.; 73x70 mm).

Santa Cruz, CA: Peter & Donna Thomas, 1997. Thomas, Peter and Donna. One of forty copies. Six sheets wrapped around six dowels, so that the viewer can read the Latin aphorism, "Ars est longa / vita est brevis," first, then can twist each dowel to see the English translation and publication information. An innovative structure secured by a wood and card frame held between paper-covered boards. Fine. (Measures 2 3/4 by 2 in.; 70x51 mm).

(Mount Vernon, NY: Artists & Writers Protest Inc, 1967. Folio. (28)pp. One of 100 deluxe copies. A collection of eighteen poems by writers who contributed their work as a form of opposition to the Vietnam War. The collection was edited by the artist Jack Sonenberg and contains works by Denise Levertov, Robert Creeley, Anthony Hecht, Robert Duncan, and others. The work was intended to raise money for Artists & Writers Protest Inc., an organization of artists who opposed the Vietnam War and who felt that their work should be a vehicle for political commentary and change. The group grew out of the Greenwich Village Peace Center & War Resisters' League, and they staged protest demonstrations and events throughout New York City. This portfolio was published during their first year, in 1967. Printed in black with red titles and rules. Fine in tan wrappers.

Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1994. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Three booklets and three hanging scrolls, housed together in a clamshell box. One of forty copies. With silk screened images on translucent paper and text in three languages and several colors. Signed by the publisher/designer/author, Gunnar Kaldewey. In this work, Kaldewey explores three representative buildings notable for their height, one of which no longer exists: The Longhua Pagoda of China, the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Cathedral of Cologne, Germany. The Longhua Pagoda is accompanied by discussion of its construction and its architectural elements, while the World Trade Center is described using statistics and numbers. The text accompanying the Cathedral of Cologne highlights its centuries-long building process and survival. An extremely fine copy of what now has become a memorial for September 11th in its own way. Boston: David R. Godine, 1993. Milton, Peter. Oblong folio. One of 250 copies of the deluxe edition, containing an original print by Peter Milton, who has signed both the print itself and the edition statement. Milton also provides an Afterword, in which he describes his inspiration for his illustrations, each of which adopt a surrealism that underscores the tensions of James's story. The scenes address the perception of selfhood and the biographer's struggle between journalistic fact and artistic emotion, which reach their peaks in the tale's dual climaxes. The large, unbound format of the illustrations and the story entire implicate the reader in the same questions of discovery, genuity, and audience. All sheets fine, and housed in dropback box.

NY: Kaldewey Press, 2011. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Small quarto. (18)ff. One of thirty-five copies, inscribed by the artist and printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. Kaldewey's seventy-fifth publication, lovingly detailing the origins of his press and its evolution over time. Bound as loose sheets on aqua-colored cotton rag paper made by Gangolf Ulbricht, interleaved with thin white Japanese paper and thin plastic sheets splatter-painted in blue and green. Held in a matching chemise and further housed in a gray slipcase. Very fine. (von Lucius, pp. 114-115).

(Parma: Stamperia Reale, 1779. Bodoni. Octavo. xii, 296pp. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the poetess crowned with a laurel wreath, eleven beautifully-engraved vignettes and twelve culs-de-lamp. This elegantly-printed volume was published in commemoration of the coronation of poet Maria Maddalena Morelli Fernandez with laurels on the Capitol in Rome in 1778, after enduring a three-day test of her poetic skill. She was crowned in the same ceremony that had honored Petrarch and the improvisatore Perfetti before her. Fernandez was widely renowned for her skill at poetic improvisation, and was named a member of the prestigious literary Academy of Arcadia in Rome. Upon joining the Academy, she adopted the name Corilla Olimpica. The text describes the events and includes a collection of sonnets, odes, and other poetic verses in tribute to "Corilla." (Easthampton, MA): Pennyroyal Press, 1970. Moser, Barry. Quarto. (33)ff. From an edition of thirty-five copies reserved for distribution by the artist, this is Moser's own, with his bookplate inside the front cover, and with four additional proofs, each titled, signed, and dated in pencil. Contains ten wood engravings by Moser and six epigrams from the Anthologia Graeca translated by D.L. Graham, along with a list of plates. The six epigrams, in Greek and English, are printed with type ornaments in red, yellow, and olive. This is the first Pennyroyal book to use wood engravings. According to Moser's inscription, Bacchanalia represents "the first SUCCESSFUL (Moser's emphasis) wood engravings in my oeuvre. One terrible print... was done in 1968 or '69 but it was so disappointing I never made another until 1970 and then did so under the aegis of Fred Becker for a graduate course of printmaking at the University of Mass." The contents page is keyed to a selection of page bonnet ornaments which are printed in red, blue, or green, and decorate the top margin of each essay. Spine a trifle sunned, else fine in morocco-backed marbled boards.

Boston: Privately Printed, 1925. 16mo. 35pp. Frontispiece and eleven additional plates, some photoreproductions. A retelling of a clambake given for members of the Club of Odd Volumes. Bound in plain printed wrappers. Overall toning and rubbing, else very good.

(Vancouver): Heavenly Monkey, 2004. (Seivewright, Kara). 20ff. One of 55 copies. A near-miniature flipbook printed on the rectos only, produced as a Christmas keepsake for subscribers of Heavenly Monkey, illustrated with a flying dove by Kara Sievewright. The instructions direct the reader to "Flip the bird," which, when followed, cause the dove to seemingly fly off the page. Text printed in red and green, while the bird is printed in black. Fine in heathered-pink wrappers, printed with a dove in green. (2 1/8 by 4 1/4 in.; 53x107 mm).

Signed by Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. Sublimated behind MacLaren's famous statement (frequently misattributed to Plato) is the sentiment summed up: "Be Kind." Minimal bumping to corners, else fine. (Measures 19 by 12 1/2 in.).

Contains eleven whimsical poems by Hilaire Belloc, illustrated with seventeen wood engravings cut and hand-colored by Chamberlain. Bound by Barbara Blumenthal in patterned boards, with a morocco spine stamped in black. Fine.

Square octavo. 107pp. One of 230 copies signed by the artists, Nedim Sonmez and Yvonne Jackle-Sonmez, with an additional sheet of ebru paper, signed and dated by Sonmez, bound in. A catalog with thirty-eight color reproductions of marbled pictures, nine photos in black and white on the technique of marbling, and one tipped-in sample of "Turkish Marbled Paper." With a preface by Prof. Peter Thiele, and articles by Emin Barin and Barbara Lipps-Kant. A lavishly illustrated and informative book on the history and tradition of the art of Turkish marbling and the work of two contemporary artists. Hint of fraying at lower corner, faint fading at spine, quarter-inch tear to cloth at front joint, else near fine in plum cloth.

Boston, MA: Nimrod Press, 1962. Nason, Ben. Elephant folio. (13)pp., + 6ff. plates. One of 550 copies. A massive, multi-colored, visual tour through some of La Fontaine's tales. Nason's woodcuts, which include a portrait of La Fontaine himself, command impressive dimensions while remaining lighthearted and earnest in weight. Bound in wrappers with a black shoelace. Some creasing to corners of wrappers, mild exterior stains, else near fine.

North Hills: Bird & Bull Press, 1971. Quarto. 67pp. One of 255 copies. Contains some amusing essays on paper-making, and some paper samples, including two made "with the cooperation of certain local wasps." A brief history of printing gives credit to "a man named Gutenberg, probably a foreigner," who "wanted to make a good impression." A pocket inside the cover holds an unusual piece of Americana (a circular brass whorehouse check). Very fine in quarter-cloth and marbled boards. Slipcase, which is toned at edges.
