The California avocado industry began developing earnestly in 1923 with the formation of cooperative marketing association of California avocado growers, renamed CALAVO by 1927. The Avocado Cookbook, one of the earliest cookbooks to focus on this fruit. In October, 1967 the "News for Farmers Cooperatives" published this blurb. Double page illustrations, hand sketched by the author, on site, in great detail; hand lettered. Thollander takes the reader on a nostalgic journey of farm life in California and the essential place the barn held from the 1800's to mid '70's. There is no specific index. However, on the final pages there are visitation directions given for about 50 barns. Laid in is an original order envelope and a Historic Providence Mint plate catalog for barns. Slight slant with wrinkling on the front cover, and worn edges of the dust jacket. Not price clipped. .

It is embellished with vignettes on wine, its history, uses, storage and service as well as certain articles from earlier numbers of Bottles and Bins (quarterly). Blank pages are provided and unused. Bess Cleavland's adaption reads like a modern cookbook, easy and attainable. "Just 22 years ago, tuna was a food unknown to American tables!" from the cover. Founded in 1914 when Frank Van Camp and his son bought the California Tuna Canning Company, changing the name to the Van Camp Seafood Company. The phrase "Chicken of the Sea", first devised as a way to describe the taste, was so successful that soon it also became the company name. None of the recipes are attributed. Contents appear pretty typical but belie many of the offered recipes leaning heavily towards a more elevated dining experience. As example, in the content of "Main Dishes", are found B'Stilla (a Moroccan dish requiring some skill) and Medallions of Veal with ginger, Lime and Kiwi; Sweet and Sour Prawns and Saumen en Croute (Salmon in Puff Pastry). "Desserts" offer Charlottka, Chocolate Eclairs and Macadamia Nut Pie. Contents: Menus; Appetizers; Salads; Breads; Soups; Main Dishes; Vegetables; Desserts; Beverages. ; 8vo .

Pictorial covers edge worn with creases; comb binding is not broken, the covers are firmly attached but worn. A wonderful and uncommon piece of Californian, specifically the Santa Maria Valley Community History. The Minerva Club, the oldest continuing women's club in California, was established in 1894 calling themselves "The Ladies Literary Society of Santa Maria." Original limp cloth cover somewhat faded with fraying to edges and creased corners. Poor paper quality of the title and last page resulting in heavy tone and edge chipping. Recipes with contributor's name have a strong representation of local fruits, especially citrus which Upland became known for. Lemon & Kumquat Marmalades; One-Two-Three-Four Marmalade (using grapefruit, lemon, orange & apples, 71). Many puddings including Date Nut; Grapefruit; Persimmon etc. Pickles and relishes included Fig Pickles & French Chow Chow, (59). Self Published. Near Fine. 1976. First Edition. Softcover. Red stiff card with red comb binding; the comb is somewhat flattened, otherwise a bright solid copy. This is quite a unique, fundraiser church cookbook. There are no preliminaries - title page, copyright etc. no foreword or introduction. Throughout the book are local advertisements for business. All the pages are hand numbered, and the recipes - one per page - are handwritten in the contributors handwriting, each bordered with the same graphic decorative boarder. There are blank bordered pages to write additional recipes. Sections seem typical starting with Bread and ending with Jellies and Pickles, however that's where 'typical' ends. I found very few actual bread recipes but many coffee cakes, bars, torts, and even cookies in "Bread" including German Apple Cake, Very Good Apple Cake, Banana Cake, Humming Bird Cake and of some interest to me, Persimmon Fruit Cake.
